LOPEZSelf Test 1

Globalization refers to increasing interconnectedness between nations through economic, political, and cultural connections that reduce the importance of distance and borders. It has significant impacts on issues like trade and employment. Studying globalization from an interdisciplinary approach that considers its social, economic, political, and cultural dimensions provides the most comprehensive understanding. Exercising sociological imagination helps make sense of global issues by viewing problems in the broader context of social structures rather than from a narrow perspective. The key difference between a state and a nation is that a state is a politically governed territory with defined borders and citizens, while a nation is a cultural group that can encompass multiple states through shared heritage and social relations.

Self-Test #1
1. What is Globalization and how does it occur subjectively?

Globalization refers to the interconnection of nations to other nations,

strengthening the countries' brotherhood and making the meaning of sovereignty from
barriers as blocking outsiders into improving cross-border relationships. It pushed the
distance, different languages, and geographic boundaries not a problem in intensifying
man's relationship. These forms of connections that were built through globalization are
maybe economic, political, or cultural. It embarks a significant impact on trade and
employment as there are expansion and stretching of social relations. As a
communication major, telephones were made for business or the economy. Thus,
scholars made more advanced technologies to improve human communication. These
are how globalization reshaped our concept of time and space, especially if I could live
during the significant globalization steps. Lastly, it occurs subjectively in that it makes the
people more aware of the world we are living in. It makes us better citizens as we are in
a network of different social connectivity forms that shape our perception of the globe.

2. Why should we use the interdisciplinary approach in studying Globalization?

Using an interdisciplinary approach in studying globalization is the most
appropriate one. A scholar with his paper on a specific topic can only focus on a subject.
In other words, maybe he cannot see the whole picture because of their parochial
perspective. With an interdisciplinary approach, we could see the bigger picture or the
most accurate one or study the entire globalization process itself. We can also
accurately understand the social, economic, political, and cultural processes that shape
itself.
3. Why do we need to exercise our sociological imagination to make sense of the
contemporary world?
Sociological imagination is the ability to see the social patterns that influence
each part of the community. Understanding the problems in light of the greater context of
social structures is what Mr. C Wright Mills argues. By exercising sociological
imagination to understand social issues, we can look at them in a broader society
without being parochial. And not being narrow-minded, we can stretch the limits of our
imagination until to the point of understanding a problem. With this widening of our
imagination in studying or understanding the networked system of relations in
globalization, it is essential to look in the bigger picture to trace the interlocked webs and
analyze the personal problems that are consequences of more significant issues.
4. Explain the difference between the State and The Nation.

The State in political science means a piece of land governed politically. It is

measurable or quantifiable, such as citizens are numbered, territories have borders, and
it defines as a country. It is a community with people permanently occupying the patch of
land having a government that acts as the authority to maintain peace and order while
enjoying freedom from external control. On the other hand, a nation is a group of people
who share a common cultural heritage. In political terms, a nation is a group of states or
countries that builds social relations which can empower the countries underneath.
