But/ Although/ Though/ Even though + Clause


✔ Tom was born in Madrid, but he doesn’t speak Spanish.
✔ Although/ Though / Even though Tom was born in Madrid, he doesn’t speak Spanish.
✔ Tom was born in Madrid. He doesn’t speak Spanish, though. (very informal)

Despite/ In spite of + __-ing / noun


✔ Despite/ In spite of having a comfortable bed, I have trouble sleeping.
✔ Despite/ In spite of the heavy rain, we went for a walk.

However/ Nevertheless
✔ It was raining heavily. However/ Nevertheless, we went for a walk.

1. Although Sarah was successful, she felt dissatisfied.

2. In spite of being dangerous, skydiving is very exciting.

3. I’m afraid of travelling by plane, but I’m planning to go to Brazil.

4. Mary believes the system is useful although she knows it is not good for everybody.

5. In spite of being very rich, Jenny doesn’t buy expensive clothes.
