HISTORY
BASKETBALL
Basketball began in 1891, it was invented by
James Naismith in Springfield, Massachusetts,
as being a less injury-prone sport than
football. He was a 31-year-old graduate
student when he created the sport, keeping
players indoors during the winter. The game
became established quite quickly, and it grew
very popular into the 20th century. The
popularity spread overseas and the
International Basketball Federation (FIBA)
was organized in 1932 in Geneva, Switzerland.

COURT EQUIPMENT

BASKET Basket consists of a round shaped

metal rim with the covering of net
around it. Baskets are mounted at a
certain height (10 feet above the floor).

BALL
Ball is the most visible equipment in the
game of basketball. There are different
types of basketball used in different
leagues. Usually it is made of leather,
rubber or any synthetic material but it
has to be inflated properly..

OFFICIALS EQUIPMENT

UNIFORM OF OFFICILS
Officials wear a uniform
prescribed by their respective
governing body. Usually, officials are
dressed in white and black stripped
shirts, black pants and black shoes.
NBA officials wear gray shirts, black
pants and black shoes.

Basketball referee carries a

WHISTLE
whistle which he blows every
time he needs to stop a play.

PLAYERS EQUIPMENT

PLAYERS UNIFORM Uniform

consists of jersey (preferably sleeveless), short
and shoes. All the teams wears their own
specific uniform. In NBA, all players wear a
uniform prepared by league’s sponsored
sportswear company. They are not allowed to
wear shorts which are too long. In NBA, players
can be fined if their uniform does not comply
with the rules of the league.

PROTECTIVE GEARS AND ACCESORIES

Protective gears and accessories include goggles,
face masks, mouth guards, knee pads or brace,
headbands, arm sleeves, wristbands etc. Not all
players wear necessarily all these things. They use
them only when they required them.
BASKETBALL COURT DIMENSIONS
Court Size
- the size of the basketball depends on the playing
level. The size of the court for the NBA and College
games is 94 feet long and 50 feet wide. It is smaller for
High School and Junior High competitions.
The backboard and rim
- the regulation height above the ground of the rim
(hoop) is 10 feet, and the rim is 18 inches in diameter.
Blackboards are 6 feet wide (72 inches) by 42 inches
tall, with the inner square being 24 inches wide by 18
inches tall.
The foul line
- for all side courts, the "foul line" is 15 feet in front of
the backboard.
The key
- the key is 12 feet wide, and is the same for all
basketball courts. The backboard extends 4 feet out
over the baseline into the key. A half circle of diameter
6 extends from the foul line away from the basket to
complete the key.
The 3 point line (Arc)
- for NBA basketball courts, the 3 point arc is 22 feet
to the center of the rim on the sides with a straight line
extending out 16 feet, 9 inches from the baseline. Past
those points, the line extends out 23 feet, 9 inches
from the center of the rim.
Line markings - all line markings on the floor are 2 inches
wide and can vary in color
Object of the game - the object of the basketball is to
throw the ball into the hoops to score a points. The game
is played out on a rectangular court and depending on
which section of court you successfully throw a ball into
the basket will depend on how many points are scored.
The ball can be moved around by dribbling or passing the
ball. At the end of the game, the team with the most points
is declared the winner.

Players and equipment - each team is made up of 12

players with only 5 allowed in the court at any time. The
positions are broken up into the Point Guard, Defensive
Guard, Center, Offensive forward and Defensive forward.
Each player then will take up a position on the court but
are allowed to move around as they please.

Scoring - there are 3 scoring numbers for basketball

players. Any basket scored from outside the 3 point arc
will result in 3 point score being scored. Successful free
throws will result in 1 point being scored per free throw.
The number of free throws will depend on where the pool
was being committed.

Winning the game - winning a game of basketball is pretty

simple, score more points than your opponents in the
allotted game time. If the scores are tied at the end, then
an extra quarter will be played until a winner is found.

RULES OF THE GAME

RULES OF
BASKETBALL
• Each team can have a maximum of 5 players on the
court at any one time. Substitutions can be made as
many times as they wish within the game.
• The ball can only be moved by either dribbling
(bouncing the ball) or passing the ball. Once a player
puts two hands on the ball (not including catching
the ball) they cannot then dribble or move with the
ball and the ball must be passed or shot.
• After the ball goes into a team's half and they win
possession back the ball must then make it back over
the half way line within 10 seconds. If the ball fails to
do so then a foul will be called and the ball will be
turned over.
• Each team has 24 seconds to at least shot at the
basket. A shot constitutes either going in the basket
or hitting the rim of the basket. If after the shot is
taken and the ball fails to go in the basket then the
shot clock is restarted for another 24 seconds. The
team trying to score a basket is called the offence
whilst the team trying to prevent them from scoring
is called the defence. The defence must do all they
can to stop the offence from scoring by either
blocking a shot or preventing a shot from being fired.
RULES OF
BASKETBALL
• After each successful basket the ball is then
turned over to the opposition.
• Fouls committed throughout the game will be
accumulated and then when reached a certain
number will be eventually be awarded as a free
throw. A free throw involves one player from
the offensive team (the player fouled) to take a
shot unopposed from the free throw line.
Depending on where the foul was committed
will depend on the number free throws a player
gets.
• Violations in basketball include travelling
(taking more than one step without bouncing
the ball), double dribble (picking the ball up
dribbling, stopping then dribbling again with
two hands), goaltending (a defensive player
interferes with the ball travelling downwards
towards the basket) and back court violation
(once the ball passes the half way line the
offensive team cannot take the ball back over
the half way line).

DRIBBLING

SHOOTING

PASSING
BASKETBALL
To hit the upper stages of the game that most
desire to play, the finest players in the world
have perfected each of these abilities or at
least a large number of them.

Dribbling is the act of moving the ball across

the floor by a player. If a player walks around
the court with the ball, it is considered a
traveling violation.

The only attribute that primarily involves

scoring points is shooting. Even if a player
makes a layup or a three-pointer, the act of
shooting or trying to score the basketball is the
same.

The aim of defense is to stop the opposing team

from getting good shooting and scoring
opportunities. A team may never beat a
basketball game if they don’t play excellent
defense; thus it’s a quality that everyone should
acquire.

BASKETBALL
On both the offensive and defensive ends,
rebounding is the way of regulating shot
attempts. Managing the most missed shots
results in more scoring chances and, in turn,
more scores for a team.

Outside of dribbling, passing is another way

to move the ball around the court. A team
with strong passers may generate more
scoring opportunities, allowing them to win
more games and score more points.
