INTRODUCTION

There are probably more people involved in coaching than in any other profession. The
commitment required can be time-consuming and exhausting, but is also highly rewarding
and satisfying.

I cannot over-emphasise how important it is to set goals, monitor and record progress, then
evaluate. Without doing this, you will often just ‘drift’ along with little or no direction, quite
unaware of how you are doing.

Receiving feedback from an experienced mentor, who observes you in action, is also
invaluable. I am available in my role as Regional Development Manager to give you verbal
or written feedback if requested, and there are other experienced coaches around who
would enjoy the opportunity to do the same. Feedback from players is always of benefit
too.

For each team that I coach each season, I use an exercise book to write up team talks,
trainings, debriefs and to record detailed player data. The ‘Coachmaster’ folder, available
from ‘Just Hockey’ shops, is also a great resource. This booklet is an adjunct to these and any
other systems that you may use, so at the end of the season, you will have a detailed record
and diary of what you have achieved.

Good luck!

Mark Smithells
Regional Development Manager (CoachForce Hockey)
Sport Otago

“You should have the attitude of developing players holistically as people, not just as
athletes.”

Leigh Gibbs - Former ‘Silver Ferns’ Coach and player

“When selecting, speed and athleticism are key as they can only be marginally improved
on. Skills and tactical sense can be greatly improved, and a sound personality is vital.”
