This document contains a 5 question discrete mathematics assessment on propositional logic, predicate logic, and rules of inference with the following details: 1) The assessment is for a Discrete Mathematics course and contains questions involving propositional functions about words containing letters, comparisons of positive integers, and properties of kids. 2) Question 5 involves a multi-part conditional statement reasoning through an argument about getting gas for a car and getting a soda. 3) Students are given 60 minutes to complete the 5 questions worth a total of 30 marks.

ASSESSMENT INSTRUCTION:
Answer all questions within 60 minutes.
QUESTIONS:

1) Let P(x) be the propositional function “the word x contains letter a and t”. Write each
proposition in words. Hence, determine the truth value.
a. P(chicken) (2 marks)
b. P(Malaysia) (2 marks)
c. P(YouTube) (2 marks)

2) Let P( x, y) be the propositional function x  y . The domain of discourse is the set

of all positive integers. Determine whether each proposition is true or false.

a. xyP( x, y) (2 marks)
b. xyP( x, y) (2 marks)
c. xyP( x, y) (2 marks)

3) Let P(x) denotes “x loves reading”, Q(x) denotes “x likes swimming”, and R(x)
denotes “x is healthy”. The domain of x consists of all kids. Express each of the
following quantification in words.
a. x( P( x)  Q( x)) (2 marks)
b. xP( x)  xR( x) (2 marks)
c. xQ( x) xP( x) (2 marks)

4) Let K(x,y) be the propositional function “x smarter than y”, where the domain is a set of all
students. Use predicate logics and quantifiers to express each of the following statements.
a. Someone is smarter than anyone. (2 marks)
b. Not everybody is not smarter than someone. (2 marks)
c. Rex is smarter than everyone. (2 marks)
5) Use rules of inference to show that the conclusion follows from the hypothesis.

If there is a gas in the car, then I will go to the store.
