communicating with key stakeholders. Provide at least three reasons why communication is
critical for the success of your project.

and lac of effective communication. Bruce didn’t make his research as effective as needed.

The case shows there was inadequate communication between management and research
chemist. We could feel that there is lack of direction from management to employees and the
new research program that Petro-chemical company was trying to launch was not well
communicated with the employees.

The lack of feedback tools for continuous listening so that the company and managers
understand how effectively they were communicating and how their employees were responding.
So, the audience analysis was poor.
Bruce was not using the best practice to format his reports according to the audiences (must have
highlighted findings and suggestions, further improvements must be clearly defined).

communicate with each other about their past week work and upcoming work or planning. This
would have prevented from finding the research work done seven years ago via weekly meeting
and through this, company would have knew about the research years ago then they would have
made firm beneficial financially as well as researcher Mr. Bruce would be appreciated and this
research would have benefited the environment with more safe insecticide. Also Mr. Bruce
should again be offered a job.

Case 2.

Q1 :-Define the rhetorical situation:

Through a 120-page proposal, The Acme Electric Company is communicating with the
threemajor aluminum producers about its regulators, which were built by them and could reduce
electric power usage in aluminum facilities by 35 percent. They sent a proposal because they
want their regulators placed at all of the company's facilities. The communication's targetis to
capture the market and make a profit.

Q2:- Identify the communication error: She made a 120-page proposaland sent it to companies
with full mathematical and engineering theories behind the regulator's mechanism instead of
classifying the major goal and comparing how their regulator is best for the companies to other
competitors, and they failed to draw the proper graph that shows how much money would be
saved.

Q3:- Explain what costs/losses were incurred by this problem. :Due to insufficient
communication, the Acme Electric Company suffered significant losses and was forced to
proclaim bankruptcy.

firm should make direct communication in order to have a good impact.Instead of mathematical
theories, the communication objective and the firm's main purpose should be at the front of the
proposal. Whoever runs a company would never waste their time reading a 120-page proposal
filled with mathematical theories. As a result, The Acme Electric Company should have made it
clearly apparent how their product differs from others and how they can reduce electric power
usage by 35%. Instead of sending proposals, they could utilize a Powerpoint presentation or
videos to explain the benefits and value of their product in comparison to any other replacement
regulators on the market.

1. Define the rhetorical situation. Who is communicating to whom about what, how and
why? What was the goal of the communication in each case?

Answer:
In this case study, the Author is communicating to the audience about an instructional manual
that was too difficult to understand and so it failed to communicate the original theme, instead it
scared the customers away. The manual failed to promote the product and cost Sagatec Software,
Inc a lot of money. The purpose of the instruction manual was to guide the customers about the
new word processing program. However, the manual was really difficult and could not be
understood by office workers. Subsequently, after a survey, the business journal made a decision
about the manual as too complicated for the end-users. The main goal of the communication is to

Case 4.
Questions
1. Define the rhetorical situation. Who is communicating to whom about what, how and
why? What was the goal of the communication in each case?
Answer:
The situation is that the supervisor doesn't want anyone working overtime and is trying to do this
by sending out a memo in hopes that her employees change their schedules.

2. Identify the communication error (poor task or audience analysis? Use of inappropriate
language or style? Poor organization or formatting if information? Other?
Answer:
Joanne's message is clearly geared towards her employees. However, her language is
inappropriate; it's unclear exactly what she wants her audience to do. The formatting is messy as
her sentences are far too long and tangled and wordy and are not to the point.

3. Explain what costs/losses were incurred by this problem.

Answer:
The losses that were incurred by this are time and credibility. A part of being a good
communicator is knowing how to talk to your audience and Joanne clearly failed at this. Her
employees may not go to her in the future if they have questions. Time was lost because her
employees likely didn't change their schedules and she spent too much time fixing the
miscommunication.

4. Identify possible solutions ot stratifies that would have prevented the problem, and what
be benefits would be derived from implementing solutions or preventing the problem.
Answer:
A possible solution would be to be to have a PR practitioner or skilled writer identify the
audience, the issue; and craft the appropriate message. She also could have had a coworker proof
read the message for clarity. This would have saved a week worth of unnecessary overtime and
she wouldn't have lost credibility between her employees and fellow coworkers.

Case 5

Who is communicating to whom?- The physicists to the congress.1.2 About what is being
communicated?- The project proposal for the SSC or Superconducting Supercollider that is
believed to be the preeminent instrument on the planet for seeking the structure of matter and
nature of the early universe.1.3 How are they communicating?- The passage did not clearly
stated how they communicated, but I assumed they communicated through proposals of project
since the concern is between the congress and a group of experts- physicians.1.4 Why are they
communicating?- The purpose why this group of physicians are communicating to one another is
because they planned to make the SSC come true or be created.1.5 What was the goal of the
communication?- the goal of the communication was to reach a common ground of
understanding and agreement for both parties to be beneficial for each of them.

2.1 is there a message analysis error? In what paragraph or line does it say so? - yes, there is a
message analysis error, or an error happened that was caused by misunderstanding of the
receiver or the perceived message of the receiver, that is the congress. It says so in the line “Few
in Congress understood what modern high-energy accelerators are for.” Since majority of the
congress doesn’t have the ability or does not have the extensive vocabulary and understanding to
what the physicians are presenting to them with all their “science-y” words.2.2 is there any use
of inappropriate language? - no, there weren’t any usage of inappropriate language, but I am
assuming that there were lots of usage of technical language that made the congress disapprove
the project.2.3 is there any poor organization of information? - yes, there were many as stated
by the author of the passage. The physicians had poor organization of information leading them
to the downfall of their project, which is the SSC that was stated by the line “financial
mismanagement, budgetary constraints, and political incompetence, I think this is the key to the
failure of the SSC” and “Explanations that involve entities called quarks, charm, flavor, color,
etc., sound as if physicists are being cute.”2.4 identify other communication error in the passage.
- there were stereotypes that was said by the congress towards the physicians, because of the
language barrier between them that is different language used by different professionals;
technicallanguage for the physicians- take note that language barrier does not always mean other
nationality’s language, there can be science or technical language, or any language used in
professional fields.3.1 what solutions would have prevented the problem? - solutions that
perhaps would have prevented the problem was more effort, as stated by the author, for the
physicians to apply and convince the congress, because they should know for a fact that not
everyone is exposed to the kind of language they are using especially groups of professionals
have different ability on language usage for communication, or they have different field of
study.3.2 what are the benefits if this solution has been implemented? - chances are if the
solution has been implemented. SSC might be approved and discovery of the universe might be a
big hit for the people that are involved in the project, it might lead to a discovery of how to
protect the earth for a billion of years and other amazing discoveries for the benefit of mankind
and other living things or non-living things in the planet. It might even discover other life on
planets, it can be open doors to many researches and so much more since the SSC is meant to
seek the fine structure of matter and the nature of the universe.

Case 6

Questions
1. Define the rhetorical situation. Who is communicating to whom about what, how and
why? What was the goal of the communication in each case?
Answer:
 • The situation in this case is that the discussion is among Chris and his director to delineate
the result of the investigation. This had a business target of featuring to the divisions the result of
the investigation.
 • Then Chris is communicating to his director by writing narrative essay based on some
personal experience on a safety inspection of the plant but he was not able to write the same
scenario in a compliance memo as per the instruction of his supervisor
2. Identify the communication error (poor task or audience analysis? Use of inappropriate
language or style? Poor organization or formatting if information? Other?
Answer:
The communication error in this case is Chris’s essay writing style. The essay that he wrote was
according to the necessities of the instructor. Also, the essay was narrative as per the
requirements. Despite the fact Chris aced the essay getting an A grade, his supervisor did not
accept it and wants the essay to be rewritten. Because the introduction of his essay was narrative
but not up to the point. He had to convey a specific information hence he missed the objective of
writing completely. If Chris had asked for suggestions before starting the essay, he probably
wouldn’t have to rewrite the whole thing. As his supervisor wants the essay to start off whether
or not the plant was compliance with the safety regulations.

3. Explain what costs/losses were incurred by this problem. Answer:

Chris should have formulated the compliance memo in a business writing format but he relied on
the narrative draft he had prepared for the essay. This costed him time, stress where his
submission was rejected by his supervisor. He also lost a bit of his credibility in the eyes of the
supervisor as he showed lack of clarity. The loss in time due to Chris’s understanding is indirect
loss to business.

4. Identify possible solutions ot stratifies that would have prevented the problem, and what
be benefits would be derived from implementing solutions or preventing the problem.
Answer:
Chris could have consulted his writing instructor for suggestions or should have researched
through other sources and this would have perhaps given him a reliable writing template to be
followed.
