Chapter 1:
It is now two weeks after Pyle’s death, Fowler encounters Vigot, the french investigator
for Pyle’s murder. Vigot voices his suspicions on Fowler.
The narration goes back in time, to just after Pyle confronts Fowler for lying in his
letters. Fowler worries over the possibility of losing Phuong. Wherever she returns to the
apartment, she gives loose reasoning for being out.
Fowler is requested via a note from Mr Chou to go to a store on Boulevard Charner the
next morning. The next day, Fowler makes his way to the specified location and waits.
While he is waiting he finds himself in the middle of a bombing. The bombs were
planted in local bikes. Mr. Heng finally arrives, just before the fountain of bikes
explodes. Fowler realizes that the mold Mr. Heng had shown him in Mr. Chou’s
warehouse resembled a bicycle pump. Fowler then connects the bombing from Mr.
Chou to General Thé.
Fowler pays a visit to Mr. Muoi’s garage looking for bike tire mold. The garage was
empty. He ended up finding no signs of any molds. Fowler gets back to his apartment.
Phuong is not home. With a little snooping through her drawers, he figures out Phuong
has left him for good. Fowler then goes to the American Legation in search of Pyle, but
he is not there. Instead he gets in an argument with one of the workers and cries for one
of the first times ever.
Fowler travels north to report on the fighting in Haiphong. Fowler is invited to join a
“vertical” raid on a B-26 bomber but he is forbidden from writing about the experience.
From the interior of the bomber, Fowler observes the three different waves of bombing.
Chapter 2:
Fowler returns to his apartment in Saigon with Pyle and Phuong waiting for him. They
have small talk and we learn that Pyle plans to marry Phuong back in the United States.
Fowler is out at his daily spot for a beer. At that moment, there is an explosion. Fowler
leaves and makes his way to where the explosion came from, the Place Garnier. When
he arrives, he sees smoke and wreckage but no one knows really what happened. Pyle
arrives on the scene and assures Fowler that Phuong is safe. Fowler warns Pyle that
this is all General Thé doing.
Part Four
Chapter 1:
The narration jumps back to two weeks after Pyle’s death. Vigot visits Fowler while
Phoung is out at a movie. Vigot informs Fowler that he knows Fowler saw Pyle the night
he died. Vigot gives reasoning for his claims stating that the timeline Fowler had given
him did not match up with where he actually was. Fowler responds by telling Vigot that
he has nothing to say. After Vigot left, Fowler wished that he had enough bravery to tell
Vigot that he had actually seen Pyle the night he died.
Chapter 2:
The narration returns to the day of the explosion in the Place Garnier. Fowler goes to
Mr. Chou’s warehouse again. Mr. Heng is there, who ends up confirming that Pyle and
General Thé were behind the bombing with the bikes. Fowler exclaims that the
Americans who are going through with this bombing must be stopped. Mr. Heng then
asks Fowler to invite Pyle for dinner that night at a restaurant that is not under French
control at night. Fowler considers warning Pyle about the danger he is in but decides
not to act on that thought. Later Pyle came to Fowler's apartment where they argued
about Pyle’s connection with General Thé. After the argument Pyle agrees to go to
dinner with Fowler. Fowler gave the signal to Mr. Heng that Pyle had corroperated.
Fowler went to a movie theater and then headed to the restaurant where he asked for a
table for one. Fowler eats, thinking about Pyle’s fate and Phuong. He goes home and
waits for Pyle until he goes out into the street, finding Phuong.
Chapter 3:
The narration returns to the present time. Vigot has just left Fowler’s apartment and
Phuong has returned from the movies. They converse. Fowler then asks Phuong if she
is happy, and she responds with yes. She also reminds him to open the telegram that
came for him.The telegram read that Helen, Fowler’s former wife finally filed for a
divorce. Fowler then pressed a question on Phuong, if she had wanted to see the
skyscrapers in the United States with Pyle? She responded by saying she wants to see
the Cheddar Gorge in England. Fowler apologizes to Phuong but she runs off to go visit
her sister and tell her the good news. After Phuong left the apartment, Fowler
reminisced, thinking about the day he first met Pyle at the Continental. He then reflected
on how great his life has been since Pyle died but he does wish that he could apologize.
