Lab Report 04

The document describes the process for designing a spur gear with 20 teeth using Solidworks. Key steps include defining design parameters like module, pressure angle, and face width. Circles are sketched representing the pitch, addendum, and dedendum circles. An involute tooth profile is created using lines and arcs. The profile is mirrored and patterns to create all teeth. Extrude features are used to form the gear solid model.

involute teeth profile.
Commands to be used:
1) Circle Command
2) Line Command
3) Arc Command
4) Offset Command
5) Sketch Fillet Command
6) Mirror Command
7) Extend Command
8) Trim Command
9) Extrude Command
10) Circular Sketch Pattern Command

Description of Drawing:
For creation of an involute profile of spur gear “base circle” is utilized as foundation. There are
many ways of creating a gear but here I’m using equation driven method for creating spur gear.
Here I’m going to draw involute teeth profile of spur gear by two methods. i.e. by equation
driven method and by rolling tangent method.
We only need four parameters to fully express the whole spur gear design.
1. Number of teeth
2. Module
3. Pressure Angle (usually 20º)
4. Face Width
At first, you need to define a series of terminologies to perform the spur gear calculations:
 The number of teeth (T): This value is: T = D/m
 Module (m): It is the ratio between the pitch circle diameter in millimeters and the
number of teeth. Two mating gears must have the same module: m = D/T
 Pitch Circle Diameter (D): It is the diameter of the pitch circle; its value is: D = m x T

 Circular Pitch (pc): It is the distance measured on the circumference of the pitch circle
from a point of one tooth to the corresponding point on the next tooth. It is usually
denoted by pc. Mathematically, Circular pitch, pc = π D/T
 Diametral Pitch: It is the ratio of number of teeth T to the pitch circle diameter D
in millimeters. It denoted by pd. Mathematically, Diametral pitch, pd = T/D
 Tooth Thickness: It is the width of the tooth measured along the pitch circle. It is half of
the circular pitch pc.
 Addendum:
It is the radial distance of a tooth from the pitch circle to the top of the tooth. It is
reciprocal of the diametral pitch.
 Clearance (c):
It is the radial distance from the top of the tooth to the bottom of the tooth, in a meshing
gear. A circle passing through the top of the meshing gear is known as clearance
circle. It is the ratio of circular pitch pc to the number of teeth on gear. Clearance = pc/T
 Dedendum:
It is the radial distance of a tooth from the pitch circle to the bottom of the tooth.
Dedendum = Addendum + Clearance
 Backlash (B): It is the difference between the tooth space and the tooth
thickness, as measured on the pitch circle.

Number of teeth = 20
Pressure Angle = 20
Module = 2
Backlash= 0.1
Pitch Circle Diameter = D = 40
Circular Pitch = pc = 6.2832
Clearance = 0.3141
Diametral Pitch = 0.5
Tooth Thickness = 3.1416
Width of Space = 3.1416
Addendum = 2
Addendum Circle Diameter = 44
Dedendum = 2.3141
Dedendum Circle Diameter = 35.3717
Circular Pitch Angle = 4.5

Drawing Procedure:
1. Pick part option from new Solid works document dialogue box, select front plane and enter
sketch mode by picking sketch option.

2. Pick equations from tools menu.

3. Define global variables, calculate their values, add description in comment section about them
and click ok.

4. Set the sketch normal to plane and construct a circle of dimension equal to calculated value of
pitch circle diameter. To do this, pick parameter Dp from dimension dialogue box.

5. Select circle command and sketch addendum and dedendum circle and mention
dimensions.

6. Make all the sketched circles as construction circles. Sketch a base circle by drawing a tangent
circle to two drawn construction lines at circumference of pitch circle with angle between them
equal to pitch angle. Mention “Base Circle” as dimension text to differentiate it from other.

Figure 7 base circle

7. Draw two lines, make them equal and turn them as construction lines. Create a little extended
tangent line to base circle, divide that line into three equal parts and make them construction
lines. In this way four line segments would be created.

9. From a point on divided line segments, construct a center point arc which touches
addendum and dedendum circle.

10. To indicate backlash in our design, use offset entities command, offset the sketched arc to the
desired distance for backlash and make sure that sketches arc’s endpoints touch the addendum
and dedendum circle. Power trim and extend entities command would be used in this step.

11. Draw two construction lines from center of all sketched circles at angle of magnitude equal
to value of circular pitch angle which we provided in declaration of parameters.

12. Use mirror entities command and mirror the sketched arc which we used to indicate
backlash.

circles of optimum dimensions.

desired shape in order to create a central hole.
