literature. Like any other poem, the haiku is a reflection of a person’s feelings and thoughts. However,
it has different form: it is composed of only three lines of seventeen syllables. Japanese haikus are
noted of their simplicity and depth despite the seeming lightness. Read the following sets of
haiku and infer their significance.

Japan’s well—loved contribution to the world of literature is the haiku. A haiku is composed of three
lines, the first containing five syllables, the second line with seven syllables, and the third having five
syllables again, thus the formula 5-7-5.

Despite its simplicity, a haiku is able to create depth in such limited form. Economy of
words is surely at work when one writes a haiku. Added to this is the dimension of spirituality
mingled with spontaneity which only a haiku can successfully achieve.

Among its characteristics are lightness, simplicity, openness, and depth.

Below is a haiku written by Basho. Though he did not follow strictly the rule on number
of syllables, discover the beauty of weeds in the summer in his haiku.

Green weeds of summer

Grow where swordmen’s dreams
Once used to shimmer.
-Basho

Haiku was developed during the Tokugawa period in Japan (1603 – 1620) and its target
were the townspeople. It greatly appealed to people who only had informal education but were
nonetheless very appreciative of this form of poetry.

Prose poetry – is poetry written in prose form instead of verse form, while preserving poetic
qualities. It is a type of poem that does not have a definite accent nor set line length.
Therefore, every expression or written word that is not in the form of a verse is an example of
prose.
Examples on Casual Dialogue
“Hi, how are you?”
“I’m fine, how are you?” “Fine, thanks.”
Below is an example of a poem prose. Please read carefully.

The Things I Miss

G. Gonzalo

This is the place I live in

The swing is on the yard, leaves strewn all over, the garden where we used to
play hide and seek;
The tomatoes Mom planted had all grown, In summer everything is abloom, the
flowers’ scent floats in the air;
The sidewalk, which we walked up so many times that the cement is worn over,
the doorstep which seems to grow shorter every year;
This is my parent’s house
I can never forget the smell of fried rice and fish in the morning, my Mom’s voice
calling our names;
My sister and I fighting who takes a bath first, the sound of the rush of water
in the bathroom;
How I miss those days when everything is simple and not complicated like now,
with so many requirements and deadlines to reach

Prose is the everyday informal language used in writing a letter, a story, a term paper, or a speech.
At one point in history, prose was considered a boring way of communicating, as it was very ordinary and
dull; hence, the word prosaic was born. Now, prose is used in various communications, In journalism, for
example, prose is used for the readers to better understand journalistic text.
Poetry, on the other hand, is much more aesthetic and uses more expressive language. Sound,
expressed in rhythm, is a distinct element in poetry. Ballads and sonnets are the poetic forms that usually use
rhyme. Poetry also often uses rhetorical devices such as figures of speech.
