The approach of this Bible study is not to exhaustively teach on going deeper with God, but to
expose you to a grouping of Scriptures around going deeper with God. Using God’s Word in
this area exposes you to God’s truth for divine inspiration. Prayerfully work each Bible study
seeking God’s truth and wisdom for your life. Make it your goal to complete each Bible study
with specific applications that will help you in this area. Do not do the study as an exercise in
Biblical content, but as a tool for God through the work of the Holy Spirit to bring transformation
and change to your life.
1. John 17:3 “Now this is eternal life: that they may know You, the only
true God, and Jesus Christ, Whom You have sent.”
a. What does God desire in your life?
2. Spending time with God in prayer and Bible reading is called a quiet
time. The quiet time is shut-in time with God to expose your soul
and heart to God so that you can receive His truth. This is a time
when you allow God to speak to you through His Word, speak into
your life through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, refresh you, and
direct you in a way that opens you more to God.
a. Why is the quiet time important? (Open question)
3. Romans 12:2 “Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be
transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and
approve what God's will is – His good, pleasing and perfect will.”
a. What do you learn from this verse about the process of knowing God?
4. James 1:22 “Do not merely listen to the Word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what
it says.”
a. What does God want in your walk with Him?
6. Matthew 13:22-23 “The one who received the seed that fell among the thorns is
the man who hears the Word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of
wealth choke it, making it unfruitful. But the one who received the seed that fell
on good soil is the man who hears the Word and understands it. He produces a
crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown."
a. Here you have a contrast of how you receive the Word of God. Describe the
two paths you can take in cultivating your relationship with God.
Your intimacy with God produces positive benefits that far exceed any benefits that
can come from your own efforts, relationships, and what the world can provide.
God’s benefits are higher and better than anything you can imagine or desire.
7. Exodus 33:16-17 “„How will anyone know that You are pleased with me and with
Your people unless You go with us? What else will distinguish me and Your people
from all the other people on the face of the earth?‟ And the LORD said to Moses,
„I will do the very thing you have asked, because I am pleased with you and I
know you by name.‟"
a. God indicated relationship and intimacy by knowing Moses by name.
Personally knowing Him by name indicates relationship from spending time
together. What are some of the advantages of spending time with God?
The daily quiet time forms the basis of developing an intimate relationship with God.
Determine what works best for you and then pursue it with enthusiasm and
continuity!
8. Luke 19:11-27 “ While they were listening to this, He went on to tell them a
parable, because He was near Jerusalem and the people thought that the
kingdom of God was going to appear at once. He said: „A man of noble birth
went to a distant country to have himself appointed king and then to return. So
he called ten of his servants and gave them ten minas. “Put this money to work,”
he said, “until I come back.” But his subjects hated him and sent a delegation
after him to say, “We don't want this man to be our king.” He was made king,
however, and returned home. Then he sent for the servants to whom he had given
the money, in order to find out what they had gained with it. The first one came
and said, “Sir, your mina has earned ten more.” “Well done, my good servant!” his
master replied. “Because you have been trustworthy in a very small matter, take
charge of ten cities.” 18 The second came and said, “Sir, your mina has earned
five more.” His master answered, “You take charge of five cities.” Then another
servant came and said, “Sir, here is your mina; I have kept it laid away in a piece
of cloth. I was afraid of you, because you are a hard man. You take out what you
did not put in and reap what you did not sow.” His master replied, “I will judge
you by your own words, you wicked servant! You knew, did you, that I am a hard
man, taking out what I did not put in, and reaping what I did not sow? Why then
didn't you put my money on deposit, so that when I came back, I could have
collected it with interest?” Then he said to those standing by, “Take his mina
away from him and give it to the one who has ten minas.” “Sir,” they said, “he
already has ten!” He replied, “I tell you that to everyone who has, more will be
given, but as for the one who has nothing, even what he has will be taken
away.”‟”
a. What does God want in your life?
10. Hebrew 5:7 “During the days of Jesus' life on earth, He offered up prayers and
petitions with loud cries and tears to the One Who could save Him from death,
and He was heard because of His reverent submission.”
a. What did Jesus’ time with God reflect in His life?
11. Here are some other examples of Jesus praying. What else do you learn about
His style of spending time with God?
a. Luke 6:12 “One of those days Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and
spent the night praying to God.”
c. Luke 4:42 “At daybreak Jesus went out to a solitary place. The people were
looking for Him and when they came to where He was, they tried to keep
Him from leaving them.”
d. John 6:15 “Jesus, knowing that they intended to come and make Him king
by force, withdrew again to a mountain by Himself.”
12. Luke 14:16-20 “Jesus replied: „A certain man was preparing a great banquet and
invited many guests. At the time of the banquet he sent his servant to tell those
who had been invited, “Come, for everything is now ready.” But they all alike
began to make excuses. The first said, “I have just bought a field, and I must go
and see it. Please excuse me.” Another said, “I have just bought five yoke of
oxen, and I'm on my way to try them out. Please excuse me.” Still another said, “I
just got married, so I can't come.”‟ 24 I tell you, not one of those men who were
invited will get a taste of My banquet." (NIV)
13. Romans 12:2 “Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be
transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and
approve what God's will is – His good, pleasing and perfect will.”
a. You studied this verse earlier to better understand how to know God. This time
look at this verse in terms of your culture and the ways of this world keeping
you from knowing Him. As a follower of Christ, you should never allow culture
or the world to serve as an excuse for not spending time with God and
obeying His commands. Why might you not obey and seek a closer
relationship with Jesus?
14. John 12:42-43 “Yet at the same time many even among the rulers believed in
Him. But because of the Pharisees they would not confess their faith for fear they
would be put out of the synagogue. For they loved praise from men more than
praise from God.”
a. What other reason might you not seek a closer relationship with God?
There are many ways of having a quiet time with God. The most important elements
of your quiet time are to commune with God, get to know Him, and hear from Him.
Some ways of cultivating a closer and more dynamic relationship with God through
your quiet time are:
15. Isaiah 50:4-5 “The Sovereign LORD has given me an instructed tongue, to know
the word that sustains the weary. He wakens me morning by morning, wakens my
ear to listen like one being taught. The Sovereign LORD has opened my ears, and
I have not been rebellious; I have not drawn back.”
16. Lamentations 3:22-23 “The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases. His mercies
never come to an end. They are new every morning. Great is Thy faithfulness.”
a. Have a quiet time with the Lord every day. Developing a routine of spending
time with God is good, but the structure of your routine should not discourage
you from having a quiet time. You may enjoy reading an Old Testament
chapter, New Testament chapter, a Psalm, a Proverb, and praying in a certain
manner. Your routine normally takes 30 minutes, but on this day you only have
10 minutes available. It is better to shorten the routine and still have fellowship
with God than to skip your time with Him. According to this verse, why is the
consistency of fellowshipping with God so important?
17. Psalm 119:130 “The unfolding of Your words gives light; it gives understanding to
the simple.”
a. The Lord’s love for you is never ending. Each day you can experience a fresh
touch from God. If you come to Him, He is faithful to meet you. How should
you approach God in your quiet time?
G. As you go through the day, continue to include God in every part of it.
1Thessolonians 5:17 says, “Pray continually.” Let your life be a living devotion
that is constantly engaging God; include Him in your emotions and challenges
and in seeking His power and direction. Continue to pray your application
from what He has impressed upon you in your Bible reading. You will be
surprised how often He illustrates it or allows you to share it. Psalm 119:97 says,
“Oh, how I love Your law! I meditate on it all day long.”

Going Deeper with God.‖ Lesson 2 focuses on those things that keep you from
going deeper and experiencing God’s best in your life. It will deal with your priorities
and spiritual desires and how these play an important role in knowing and
experiencing more of God. The goal of Lesson 2 is to position you to seek God’s
best.
