MATERIALS AND METHODS

Assignment 2

Building Enclosure / Envelope


Select two different architects or architectural practices, at minimum one must be from the
listed provided, who practice in the Greater Toronto Area, and then select one of their buildings
to carry out a detailed building enclosure/envelope (wall and roof assembly) analysis. The
projects selected must be of two very different building envelope applications. For example, if
one is precast the other could be brick; if one is curtain-wall the other could be panellized
metal and so on.

Research the envelope system, its elements and materials. Prepare the analysis focusing on
its components, characteristics, performance and application as well as how the system
contributes to the architectural quality of the building. Also, include the appropriateness of the
enclosure to the type of building it has been applied to.

Your analysis should include at minimum the following:


x Detailed description of the building enclosure system
x Diagrams with appropriate labelling of the various parts of the assembly
x Architect
x Type of building
x Building Use/Programme
x Construction date
x Size: area and height
x Images and diagrams as required

The analysis must include diagrams, sections, details and other appropriate graphics to
illustrate the building system. Each selected building must be illustrated separately, allow
minimum 3 pages per building. The format is to be in 8-1/2 x 11, portrait format.

Architectural Practices

At minimum, select at least one architectural office from the Greater Toronto-area and select a
building. Contact the office and / or visit their website to determine a suitable completed
building.

Evaluation Criteria

1. Quality of the concepts discussed in the essay and analysis of the selected building
2. Degree of understanding of the intent of the building enclosure
3. Extent of comprehensively capturing the aspects of building and system
4. Coherence and quality of text
5. Graphic quality of analytical drawings
6. Comprehensiveness of the project in drawing, images and text
7. Quality of the enclosure evaluation
8. Completeness of the properties of materials, detailing strategies and other related topics
9. Degree of understanding of the building system used in the case study project
10. Overall layout and completeness of assignment.
