Education Philosophy
Ever since I can remember, I have always held onto information in my brain. My mom
told me at a very young age that I was gifted at retaining things. I often would already know
ideas and concepts that others would not have picked up. With this skill, I was able to teach
others what they didn’t know. As I grew older, one of my counselors recommended I become a
teacher. I gave this some serious thought. I then realized that I was pretty good at all the things
that made up a good teacher. I decided to become a teacher because I wanted to make a
difference in children’s lives. Most of the people that know me well have suggested that I
become a teacher. The people that inspired me to become a teacher were my mom, my dad, and a
current teacher I have named Ms. White. My parents have had a huge role in this decision. They
have raised me to be a hard-working, functional member of society. When I told them that I was
interested in teaching, they fully supported me with all that they had. No words can express how
much gratitude I have for them. The next person that inspired me is my current teacher, Ms.
White. Anyone in her class can tell she truly loves her job. She comes in with a smile on her face
everyday. When I see the joy that she has teaching, it makes me want to become a teacher to
inspire other kids. My personal skill set that I think will serve me well when I start teaching is
my passion for learning, my work ethic, and my patience. The field observations helped me
understand the teaching environment by walking me through different scenarios where teachers
found solutions to the problem. For example, a teacher tested students twice to improve their
note-taking skills. Even though I might not agree with this method, the teacher found a solution
to a problem unique to his/her classroom. The field observations helped me understand that there
might be special needs in my future classroom that need to be addressed and I need to learn to
adapt.
The educational philosophy that most closely fits my current beliefs about education is
constructivism. This educational philosophy is based on the fact that learners build on their pre-
existing knowledge of a subject in order to learn more information. A real life example of this is
when teachers ask students to assess how their assignments are helping them gain understanding
on the subject. This philosophy fits my current beliefs about education because I believe that
having a strong foundation is essential in growing knowledge. In things like math, you need to be
able to do the introductory level things such as adding before you can do the quadratic equation.
The psychological orientation that most closely fits my current beliefs about education is the
humanistic perspective. This psychological orientation is focused on the study of the person as a
whole. I believe that education should be looked at through the perspective of the student and not
just the teacher. This is so we can maximize learning in the classroom by understanding student’s
capabilities. It is also the teacher’s job to draw out a student’s full potential. Some historical
events that set the stage for how I will think about children and schools are Brown V. Board of
Education, the National Defense Education Act, and Title IX. Brown V. Board of Education
ruled that racial segregation in public schools was unconstitutional. The National Defense
Education Act provided money to education institutions. Finally, Title IX banned sex-based
The instructional strategies that I will implement are essential questions, summarizations,
and student movement. Essential questions are questions students should be able to answer at the
end of the lesson. It has to be complex enough so that the students truly get the concepts
discussed. The next one is summarizations. This answers the essential question plus other
information. A teacher should know if they need to reteach the lesson or move on based on the
student's summarizations of the material. The last strategy is student movement. Since I am
currently a student myself, I can attest to how true this is. Students generally don’t like sitting in
one position for the entirety of class. It is good to implement movement during class to make
sure students are actively engaged. I will approach student learning with a lot of care and
attention. I want to train my students to succeed in life. This means that I will not always be the
“good guy.” I will approach student diversity and variability with sensitivity. I understand that
everyone comes from different situations in life and it is not my job to judge others. I am there to
teach and love the children. I will approach assessment with an observant stance. Everyday, I
will try to analyze my classroom environment to see if I need to make any adjustments.
The characteristics I need to continue in this career are a high level of patience,
continue in this career are communication, being a good listener, and adaptability. The specific
steps that I will take to get my teacher’s license and become a teacher is to get my bachelor’s
degree at UNLV, finish any other additional coursework (depending on the grade I teach), enroll
in a Nevada teacher certification program, pass my Praxis exams, and submit to a background
check.
