11120PME 332000 Mechanical Vibration Lab 2 Due on 05/26 17:00
Please answer the following questions and submit to the eeclass system with pdf format.
Purpose:
The purpose of this lab is to measure time-series data for different positions and support
structures to analyze the data. The system will be excited using a Shaker (with frequency
sweeping up), and two accelerometers will collect acceleration time-series data for the beam
and the base, respectively. After the lab, you will need to use programming to analyze the
experimental data (using tools such as Matlab or Python). Please use the data from this lab to
answer the following questions.
Questions:
Part I
Position the accelerometer at the center of the beam tip and gather response data. Next, utilize
COMSOL to conduct modal analysis and frequency sweep simulations. Finally, use the
experimental and simulated data to answer the following questions.
Q1. Plot the experimental data and its frequency response plot with the accelerometer placed
at the center.
Figure 1. Time series data and frequency response plot for the beam.
Q2. Please perform a modal analysis of the beam using COMSOL and plot the first three
modes.
Figure 2. Dimensional drawing of the beam.
Q3. Use COMSOL to simulate and excite the beam with the same acceleration and plot the
results.
Q4. Please explain the reason behind the difference in resonant frequency between the
experiment and simulation.
Part II
Place an accelerometer on the edge of the beam tip and explain the observations.
Q5. Plot the frequency response plot with the accelerometer placed on the edge.
Q6. Please explain the reason behind the additional resonance frequency observed after
placing the accelerometer on the side.
Part III
Place the accelerometer at the center of the beam tip and introduce a support frame between
the beam and the base (note that all parts are made of aluminum alloy). Then, based on the
observed behavior of the measured data, answer the following questions.
Q7. Plot the frequency response of the beam (with support frame).
Q8. Please provide an explanation for the additional resonance frequency observed in the
frequency response after adding the support frame. (Hint: Perform a modal analysis of the
entire structure.)
Q9. If the support frame is necessary for this structure, please suggest a design that resolves
the issue observed in Q8 and explain how your proposed design addresses the issue.
