Central Tendency

This document discusses measures of central tendency including the mean, median, and mode. It provides examples of calculating each using a dataset of test scores. The mean is calculated by summing all values and dividing by the total number. The median is the middle value when scores are arranged in order. The mode is the most frequently occurring value. For the example dataset, the mean is 82.0, the median is 87, and the mode is also 87.

TOPIC 7: Measures of Central Tendency

My understanding about Central tendency, it is a descriptive summary

of a dataset through a single value that reflects the center of the data
distribution. Calculating the measures central help us summarize data clearly
and succinctly. It gives also the basic information needed before moving to
hypotheses and research questions. It shows below the example of every
measures.

Central Tendency

Mean Mode

Median

Generally, the central tendency of a dataset can be described using the

following measures:
Mean (Average): Represents the sum of all values in a dataset
divided by the total number of the values.
Median: The values in a dataset that is arranged in ascending
order (from the smallest value to the largest value). If a dataset
contains an even number of values, the median of the dataset is
the mean of the two middle values.
Mode: Defines the most frequently occurring value in a dataset. In
some cases, a dataset may contain multiple modes, while some
datasets may not have any mode at all.

EXAMPLE:
First summative test scores in Filipino 9 class, are provided below.
Scores represent percent of items marked correct on the exam.
Data Array
87 99
99 94
75 93
87 88
94 87
75 87
35 87
88 75
87 75
93 35

Mean

Mean=£ X/N=820/10=82.0

Median

The median is 87. Half of the scores fall above this number and half fall below.

Mode

Mode is equal to 87. It occurs 3 times; all other scores occur only 2 times or
less.
