Practice Problems 4 and 5

This document contains instructions for solving structural theory problems on deflections of beams using the double integration method. Students are asked to solve 10 practice problems involving calculating the slope, deflection, elastic curve, and maximum deflection of different beams under various loading conditions. They are directed to show their work and solutions on paper with labels, units, and highlighted final answers according to a specific format.

INSTRUCTIONS:

Solve the following problems on an a4 size paper. Provide a 1-cm border on all sides. Write down the whole problem
and show your complete, detailed, and organized solution. Draw the figures that would supplement your solution, if
applicable. Round off your answers to the nearest 2 decimal places and do not forget to indicate the correct unit.
Emphasize your final answer by highlighting it. For the upper section of the first page, use the format below:

Activity No. 4: Moving Loads

1. A tractor weighing 3000lb, with a wheel base of 9’, carries 1800lb of its load on the rear wheels. Compute the
maximum moment and maximum shear when crossing a 14’ span.
2. Three wheel loads roll as a unit across a 44-ft span. The loads are P1=4000lb and P2=8000lb, separated by 9’,
and P3=6000 lb at 18’ from P2. Determine the maximum moment and shear in the simply supported span.
3. A truck and trailer combination crossing a 12-m span has axle loads of 10, 20, and 30kN separated by
respectively distances of 3m and 5m Compute the maximum moment and maximum shear developed in the
span.

Activity No. 5: Double integration Method

1. The bar is supported by a roller constraint at B, which allows vertical displacement but resists axial load and
moment. If the bar is subjected to the loading shown, determine the slope at A and the deflection at C. EI is
constant.

2. Determine the maximum deflection between the supports A and B. EI is constant.

3. Determine the elastic curve for the simply supported beam using the x coordinate 0≤x≤L/2. Also, determine
the slope at A and the maximum deflection of the beam. EI is constant.

4. Determine the equations of the elastic curve using the coordinates x1 and x2, and specify the slope at B and
deflection at C. EI is constant.

5. Determine the slope and deflection of the beam shown by the double integration method.

6. The beam is made of two rods and is subjected to the concentrated load P. Determine the maximum
deflection of the beam if the moments of inertia of the rods are IAB and IBC, and the modulus of elasticity is E.

7. The shaft is made of steel and has a diameter of 15 mm. Determine its maximum deflection. The bearings at
A and B exert only vertical reactions on the shaft . Est= 200 GPa.

8. Determine the maximum deflection in region AB of the overhang beam. E = 29x103 ksi and I = 204in4.

9. For problem 8, determine the slope at A and deflection of C.

10. Determine the maximum deflection of the cantilevered beam. The beam is made of a material having an E =
200GPa and I = 65x106 mm4.
