Introduction

This is an individual assignment with parameters based on your LJMU person number; and
thus all submitted work must be your Own.

The assignment consists of three sections.

Assignment 1
Section 1 – RC Design 30%
Section 2 – Steel Design 30%
Section 3 – Laboratory Report 40%

Learning Outcomes to be assessed

3. Design Simple Structural Steel Elements.

4. Design Simple Reinforced Concrete Elements
5. Perform laboratory experiments safely and interpret experimental data to deduce
structural behaviour.

Section 1 – RC Design (30%)

Figure 1: Plan view of the first floor

Figure 1 shows the general arrangement for the first floor of a new multistorey RC framed
building. The floor consists of 100mm thick one-way spanning RC slabs supported by RC
‘drop’ beams. The beams are required to support permanent actions from the slab, walls,
their self-weight and the variable action from the floor imposed load.

All RC beams are supporting a 2.6 m high wall. You are to assume the wall is spanning the
whole length of the beam (i.e. from Axis A to Axis B)

a) Using your assigned individual parameters determine the design moments and shear
forces at the supports and mid span for your assigned RC drop beam using any
analysis method. You are to assume that the ends of each beam are simply supported.
You need to show detailed calculations. Plot the beam free body diagram with all
factored loads, the bending moment and shear force diagrams. (10%)

b) Using your assigned parameters, the results from step a) and the design guidance
provided by EC2, you are to design the longitudinal reinforcement for the RC beam at
the critical section only. Produce a suitable cross-sectional sketch of the reinforced
concrete beam at the critical section, detailing the arrangement of the reinforcement
bars and associated spacing. Draw shear links as per your individual parameters (see
below) (20%)

Make any necessary assumptions and state them clearly in your answers.

Individual parameters:

Geometry a, b
Variable action on slab 3.5 - 4.0 kN/m2
Permanent finishes action on slab 1.2 - 1.6 kN/m2
(for the above two loads, select values within the range)

Reinforced concrete density 25 kN/m3

Concrete compressive strength class C32/40

Solid lightweight blockwork 10 kN/m3

Brickwork 19 kN/m3

Characteristic yield strength of all reinforcement 500 N/mm2

Maximum longitudinal bar diameter 40 mm
Minimum longitudinal bar diameter 12 mm
Diameter of links 10 mm

You are each to use parameters which are based on your 6 digit user number (i.e. LJMU
person number). Your dimensions and loadings are as follows:

Dimension
a 6 + (0.1 x 6th digit) m
b=2m 5th digit is an odd number
b = 2.4 m 5th digit is an even number

Design Beam… If your…

Beam 1 4th digit is an odd number
Beam 2 4th digit is an even number

Cross sectional Dimensions
Beam total depth (h) = 500 mm 3rd digit is an odd number
Beam total depth (h) = 480 mm 3rd digit is an even number
Beam width = 300 mm 2nd digit is an even number
Beam width = 260 mm 2nd digit is an odd number
Cover (c) 40 mm

Figure 2: Dimensions of a rectangular beam

So, for example, a student with a student number of 123456 would have the following:

Dimension
a 6.6 m
b 2m
Design Beam 2 The one on axis 2
h 500 mm
width 300
Cover (c) 40 mm
Variable action on slab Student chose 3.8 kN/m2
Permanent finishes action on slab Student chose 1.2 kN/m2

Section 2 – Steel Design (30%)

A steel column is to support a design axial load of (Q). Assume fy = 355 N/mm2. The column
is fully fixed at both ends with a length (L).

c) Select a suitable UC and carry out a classification check on the section (20%)

d) Explain the steps required to check if the buckling resistance of a chosen column is
sufficient. You are to use formulae to support your explanation but there is no need to
provide any calculations. (10%)

Values
Design axial load (Q) = 6000 kN 6th digit is from (0 to 3)
Design axial load (Q) = 5700 kN 6th digit is from (4 to 6)
Design axial load (Q) = 6300 kN 6th digit is from (7 to 9)
Column length (L) = 4 m 5th digit is from (0 to 3)
Column length (L) = 5 m 5th digit is from (4 to 6)
Column length (L) = 3.8 m 5th digit is from (7 to 9)

Section 3 – Laboratory Report (40%)

Experimental laboratory investigations will be carried out in small student groups – information
about group allocation and laboratory schedule shall be given during the introduction to the
module. Please note group allocation may alter during the year and you must regularly check
the updated information on Canvas in association with any timetable amendments on the
LJMU website.

It is your responsibility to keep accurate notes, records and photos where relevant, throughout
your experimental sessions. A pdf of the lab sheet will be available on Canvas, in advance,
prior to each experiment’s timetabled session.

Each student is to complete three experiments (laboratory practicals):

Experiment 1 Forces in a Warren truss

Experiment 2 Shear force variation with an increasing point load
Shear force variation for various loading conditions
Experiment 3 Bending moment variation at the point of loading
Bending moment variation for various loading conditions

You are to write a brief engineering laboratory report of not more than 800 words based upon
only one of the investigations you will complete during the practical element of this module.
This experiment will be announced in due course via an announcement and during the weekly
lectures.

The report is to be written in the usual technical report style following standard technical
report conventions.

What you should hand in

You are required to submit a single word document (*.doc, *.docx) via Turnitin on
Canvas which contains all three sections before the deadline outlined on page one of this
document.

on Canvas under Assignments together with recommended module texts.

Extenuating Circumstances

If something serious happens that means that you will not be able to complete this assignment,
you need to contact the module leader as soon as possible. There are a number of things that
can be done to help, such as extensions, waivers and alternative assessments, but we can
only arrange this if you tell us. To ensure that the system is not abused, you will need to
provide some evidence of the problem.

More guidance is available at this link.

Any coursework submitted late without the prior agreement of the module leader will
receive 0 marks.

Academic Misconduct

The University defines Academic Misconduct as ‘any case of deliberate, premeditated

cheating, collusion, plagiarism or falsification of information, in an attempt to deceive and gain
an unfair advantage in assessment’. This includes attempting to gain marks as part of a team
without making a contribution. The Faculty takes Academic Misconduct very seriously and any
suspected cases will be investigated through the University’s standard policy (Academic
Misconduct). If you are found guilty, you may be expelled from the University with no award.

It is your responsibility to ensure that you understand what constitutes Academic

Misconduct and to ensure that you do not break the rules. If you are unclear about what
is required, please ask.
