MAT 116
Assignment#1
Spring 2023

Solve the following questions:

1. Plot the points A = (-2, -1), B = (0, 7), C = (3, 2) and form the triangle ABC. State whether the triangle is an
isosceles triangle, a right triangle, neither of these, or both.

2. Plot the points D = (-6, 3), E = (3, -5), F = (-1, 5) and form the triangle DEF. Using distance formula verify
that the triangle is a right triangle. Also find its area.

3. Plot the point A = (0, 0), B = (6, 0), and C = (4, 4) and form the triangle ABC. Find the lengths of the
medians of the triangle.

4. Plot the points A = (1, -1), B = (4, 1), C = (2, 2) and D = (5, 4) and form the quadrilateral. Using distance
formula show that the quadrilateral is a parallelogram.

5. Plot the points A = (0, 0), B = (1, 3), C = (4, 2) and D = (3,-1) and form the quadrilateral. Using distance
formula show that the quadrilateral is a square. Find its area.

6. Plot the points P = (-2, 5), Q = (1, 3) and R = (-1, 0) and form the triangle PQR. Using slopes show that the
triangle is a right triangle. Also find its area.

7. Plot the points A = (-1, 0), B = (2, 3), C = (1,-2) and D = (4, 1) and form the quadrilateral. Using slopes show
that the quadrilateral is a rectangle. Find its area

8. List the intercepts and test for symmetry: 𝑦 = 2 𝑥3

9. Find the equation of the line passing through the centers of the circles
𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 − 4𝑥 + 6𝑦 + 4 = 0 and 𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 + 6𝑥 + 4𝑦 + 9 = 0

10. Consider the circle 2𝑥 2 + 2𝑦 2 − 12𝑥 + 8𝑦 − 24 = 0.

(a) Find the center (h, k) and radius r of the circle.
(b) Find the intercepts (if any) and
(c) Graph the circle.
