GRAMMAR SHEET – CONDITIONALS

ZERO CONDITIONAL
We use the Zero Conditional for: an always true situation. Or to talk demonstrable facts through science:

* If you heat ice, it melts. * If it rains, the land gets wet.

Structure: If + S + Present Verb + C + S + Present Verb + C

If you freeze water, it turns into ice.

FIRST CONDITIONAL
We use the First Conditional to: talk about things that will probably happen in the future.

* If I have time, I'll visit my parents this afternoon.

Structure: If + S + Present Verb + C + S + will + present Verb + C

If it rains today, I will stay at home.

SECOND CONDITIONAL
We use the Second Conditional for: Hypothetical situation. Or imaginary situations:

* If I had more money, I would buy a ship.

Structure: If + S + Past Verb + C + S + would + present Verb + C

If I won the lottery, I would travel around the world.

THIRD CONDITIONAL
We use the Third Conditional for: Hypothetical situation of the past. To talk about unreal situations in the past:

* If he had worked more, he could have saved more money.

Structure: If + S + had + Participle Verb + C + S + would + have+ Participle Verb + C

If I had won the lottery, I would have traveled around the world.
