Maria recalled a sad experience of her life. When she was a Grade six pupil she witnessed a
violent confrontation of her parents to the point that her parents were physically hurting each
other. This led to the separation of her parents. She visibly remembered the day her father packed
all his things and alighted to tricycle nearby. As the father was packing, she convinced her father
not to leave them but the father was silent. She even attempted to run after the tricycle and with
all her strength she shouted " Pa, ayaw mi byae!!!!!!. After that, she had never heard about her
father. After more than 30 years, one day she watched TV news. There was an old man featured
who has stayed for so long in a street in Manila. The DSWD took him due to COVID 19
pandemic. As the face of the old man closely captured in the camera, she felt different and she
was to say " Si Papa". She was very certain that the old man was her father whom she has never
seen for more than 35 years. Now, she has a problem. Will she get her father and take care of
hIN though she hated him the most for what he did.
Reflect on this:
You are going to help Maria by applying the idea of Kant on Duty or Goodwill. 10 sentences
Kant's idea on Duty or Goodwill is that what makes an action right/wrong and good/bad
does not depend on its outcome or consequences, but rather on morality, which he believes can
be achieved by appealing to some universal rational ethical principle - in the form of a maxim.
This confirms that in very conflict we face, it has a different impact on our lives. Different
impacts may produce different emotions in our hearts. It is difficult for Maria to decide which
path she will take in her life. We have many principles and maxims that take into account our
various emotions. In accordance with Kant's concept of duty or goodwill, we prefer to suggest
the positive option for all fathers. "No matter what he did, he is still your father," in accordance
to our maxim. In consideration of Maria's feelings, and also in accordance with Kant's Duty or
Goodwill, Maria should help find and care for her father. Despite the treatment her father did to
them, he is still Maria's father, and she will not be alive in this world without him. Living a life
full of hatred results to unending misunderstanding and conflict and we need to remind Maria
that learning how to love and forgive is the one that can give her the peace of mind she need.
