Connectors Process

The production of electronic connectors mainly involves four stages: stamping, plating, injection, and assembly. Stamping forms the connector pins from metal strips using a high-speed stamping machine. After stamping, the pins undergo plating to apply protective metal coatings like nickel or tin. Injection molding then forms the plastic housing by injecting molten plastic into molds. Finally, assembly inserts the plated pins into the molded housings to complete the connectors.

The production of connectors mainly involves the processing of three materials:

copper, plastic particles, metal. These three types of materials can be produced a
variety of electronic connectors, but the manufacturing process is basically the same,
generally can be divided into the following four stages:

 Stamping
 Plating
 Injection
 Assembly

Stamping & Plating are both processes for copper and metal materials. After the
stamping process is completed for copper and metal, then comes the plating
process(sometimes metal materials need to be plated before stamping).

1. Stamping

Stamping is to make electronic connectors (pins) from thin metal strips through a
large high-speed Stamping machine. One end of the large roll of metal tape is fed
into the front end of the Stamping machine, and the other end is wound through the
hydraulic table of the Stamping machine into the tape reel, which pulls out the metal
tape and rolls the finished stamped terminal.
2. Plating

After the connector pins are stamped, the pins should be sent to the plating area
immediately. In the plating stage, the electronic contact surface of the connector will
be plated with various metal coatings(like nickel plating, tin plating, gold plating,
etc.)to prevent oxidation and enhance electrical conductivity. When the pins are fed
into the plating equipment, similar problems with the stamping process may also
occur, like distortions, cracks, or deformations, etc. These quality defects are easily
detected by the relevant technology.

3. Injection

The plastic housing of the electronic connector is made during the injection molding
stage. The usual method is to inject molten plastic into the metal film and then
quickly cool it. The so-called “leak” occurs when the molten plastic fails to completely
fill the tire membrane, which is a typical defect detected during the injection molding
stage. Other flaws include the filling or partial plugging of sockets (these sockets
must be kept clean and unobstructed for proper connection to the pins during final
assembly). The machine vision system for quality inspection after injection molding is
relatively simple and easy to implement because the backlight of the box can easily
identify the leakage of the box seat and the insertion of the socket.
4. Assembly

The final stage of electronic connector manufacturing is the finished product

assembly. There are two ways to assemble the plated pins with the housing: the first
is to insert the pins individually, which means to insert one pin at a time; the second
is to combine the pins, which means to insert multiple pins with the housing at the
same time. The needle is plugged into the box seat at the same time. No matter
which method is used to assemble, make sure that all the pins can not have any
omissions and the positioning must be correct.
