ARTICLE REFLECTION I
The New Testament has various references to the second coming of our Lord and the last
judgment. The various signs predicting the Second Coming and depictions of it can easily cause
confusion. To grasp the when what and how of this Second Coming, we really need to glean the
various passages in Sacred Scripture. St. Paul describes a "mass apostasy" before the Second
Coming, led by the "son of perdition," the "Man of Lawlessness". The Catechism affirms that
God's triumph over the revolt of evil will take the form of the last judgment. Catechism of the
Catholic Church: "As often as you did for one of My least brothers, you did it for Me" (Mt
25:41) Those living at the time of the Second Coming will receive judgment. The souls of the
righteous will enter heavenly glory and enjoy the beatific vision.
As Jesus Christ ascended into heaven at the completion of His mortal ministry, two
angels declared to His Apostles, “This same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall
so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven” (Acts 1:11). Since that time,
believers have looked forward to the Second Coming of Jesus Christ.
When the Savior comes again, He will come in power and glory to claim the earth as His
kingdom. His Second Coming will mark the beginning of the Millennium.
The Second Coming will be a fearful, mournful time for the wicked, but it will be a day
of peace for the righteous. The Lord declared: “They that are wise and have received the truth,
and have taken the Holy Spirit for their guide, and have not been deceived—verily I say unto
you, they shall not be hewn down and cast into the fire, but shall abide the day. “And the earth
shall be given unto them for an inheritance, and they shall multiply and wax strong, and their
children shall grow up without sin unto salvation. “For the Lord shall be in their midst, and his
glory shall be upon them, and he will be their king and their lawgiver” (Doctrine and Covenants
45:57–59). The Lord has not revealed exactly when He will come again: “The hour and the day
no man knoweth, neither the angels in heaven, nor shall they know until he comes” (Doctrine
and Covenants 49:7). But He has revealed to His prophets the events and signs that will precede
His Second Coming.
First and foremost, belief in the Second Coming of Christ is essential because it is clearly
taught in the Bible. Doubting the reality of the Second Coming is doubting God's Word's
reliability and validity.
Second, the Second Coming is significant because Jesus promised it. How can we trust
anything else Jesus taught if He was wrong about the Second Coming? The Second Coming of
Christ gives us hope and assurance that God is in control of all things and keeps His promises.
"...while we await the blessed hope - the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, Jesus
Christ," Titus 2:13. The Second Coming is also significant because it will occur at a time when
the world desperately needs a righteous King. Revelation chapters 6-18 describe the events
leading up to Christ's Second Coming. The world will be destroyed, millions of people will die,
and the most evil person in history will rule over it all. All of this comes to an end with Christ's
Second Coming. According to Revelation 19:15-16, "out of his mouth comes a sharp sword to
strike down the nations; 'he will rule them with an iron scepter.' He treads the winepress of God
Almighty's fury." Perhaps no event in human history has been more eagerly anticipated than the
Second Coming. Every generation of believers, including New Testament believers, has been
convinced that Jesus will return in their lifetime. "Concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus
Christ and our being gathered to him, we ask you, brothers, not to be easily unsettled or alarmed
by some prophecy, report, or letter purported to have come from us, saying that the day of the
Lord has already come," 2 Thessalonians 2:1-2 says.
My realization of the second coming is simply I’m scared and at the same time having
joy. Who would not be scared of our Lord if he has eventually shown in front of us? Who would
not be in joy if the lord show himself again because he will save us? All of us might be happy
and have a lot of joy if we see our savior again because we love him and we always want to be
with him forever. Also, the general judgment will complete our Christian faith because it is a
reward of our God or it could be a punishment. We should not be afraid of this because our Lord
always says that we should be good and we can receive eternal happiness in heaven. Then if we
are always doing something good then he will come with us in heaven. So as early as now we
must always do good things and we must always have hope and faith that he will come again to
save us and punish the one who committed a gravely sin.
