SME3701 Minor Test 2

This document provides instructions for a continuous assessment test in Solid Mechanics IV. It consists of two questions assessing modeling and simulation of spring-mass-damper systems. Question 1 involves modeling a single mass system, adding a driving force, and determining the total system response. Question 2 involves modeling a two mass system, determining the system matrix, and calculating natural frequencies. Students are instructed to use Wolfram System Modeler to simulate the systems over 10-30 seconds and round answers to 4 decimal places.

Solid Mechanics IV (SME3701) 24 April 2023

1. Question 1 [30]
Figure 1 shows a system with a mass a 𝒎𝟏 = 𝟏𝟎 𝒌𝒈 coupled together by two springs with a

stiffness 𝒌 = 𝟖𝟎𝟎𝟎 𝑵/𝒎 , and a damper with a damping coefficient of 𝒄 = 𝟐𝟎 𝑵𝒔/ 𝒎.

Construct the presented model in Wolfram System Modeler and simulate it for 30 seconds,

giving the mass an initial displacement of 0.02m and an initial velocity of 0 m/s.

1.1. Plot the graph of the displacement of the mass (attach screen shoot) [5]

1.2. Add a force, 𝑭(𝒕) = 𝟏𝟓𝟎 𝐜𝐨𝐬 𝟏𝟓𝒕 acting on the mass and plot the new graph [5]

1.3. Determine the total response of the system and express the equation in its simplest form.

2. Question 2 [30]
A spring-mass system shown in Figure 2 has a mass of 𝒎𝟏 = 𝟓𝟎 𝒌𝒈 and 𝒎𝟐 = 𝟓𝟎 𝒌𝒈 .The

springs supporting the effective spring constant of 𝒌𝟏 = 𝟐𝟐𝟎 𝑵/𝒎 , 𝒌𝟐 = 𝟐𝟎𝟎 𝑵/𝒎 and 𝒌𝟑 =

𝟏𝟖𝟎 𝑵/𝒎.. Damper with a damping coeffient of 𝒄𝟏 = 𝟓𝟎 𝑵 ∙ 𝒔/𝒎 , 𝒄𝟐 = 𝟒𝟎 𝑵 ∙ 𝒔/𝒎 and

𝒄𝟑 = 𝟑𝟎 𝑵 ∙ 𝒔/𝒎.

2.1. Construct the model in Wolfram system modeller for 10 seconds using Translational

components, giving mass 𝒎𝟏 a displacement of 0.1m , plot the displacement graphs for

both 𝒙𝟏 and 𝒙𝟐 on the same graph. (show your construction model & the simulation

results) [10]

2.2. Determine the matrix for the system. [10]

2.3. Determine the natural frequencies of the system . [10]
