We will discuss what trauma is, how it can present, various measures of trauma, ways to
incorporate a trauma-informed approach to our school counseling practice, the best
practices for doing so, and resources to utilize going forward.

OVER OR UNDER?
1. Approximately one third of children reported at least 1
traumatic event by age 16.
2. As many as 18% of girls and 7% of boys develop post-
traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) following a traumatic
event.
3. Preventing ACEs could reduce the number of adults with
depression by as much as 34%.
4. 55% of adults had at least one ACE and 16% had 4 or more
types of ACEs.

social/emotional development. Through the implementation of a school counseling program, school counselors strive to
