Adjustment Layer
An adjustment layer applies effects or color adjustments to your
image without permanently changing pixel values. For example,
rather than making a Scale adjustment directly to your image, you
can create a Scale adjustment layer. Final Cut Pro doesn't have
adjustment layers natively, but you can add them to your software.

Ambiance
The environmental audio (or background noise) which creates the
atmosphere of the video clip. E.g., the sounds of nature, cars driving
by on the street.
A-Roll
The primary video footage of a project’s main subject and narrative.
E.g., talking head clips, interviews.
Aspect Ratio
The video width as it relates to a video’s height. Often written
width:height. E.g. The most common aspect ratio for film, tv, and
online is 16:9.
Assets
All of the useful components of a project.
Audio Keyframes
Control points used to create simple changes to audio over time,
such as fading the volume or an effect in or out of a clip.
GLOSSARY O 29
EXTRA
Audio Lanes
Separate, visually distinct layers in the timeline that allow you to
organize audio clips. Also provides reference points that make
editing easier and more efficient.
Audio Mixing
The process by which multiple sounds are combined into a final
channel.
Audio Roles
Color-coded labels applied to audio clips in order to visually
organize different types of audio tracks in a project. I.e., assigning a
role to an audio clip. E.g. Dialogue, Effects, Location Sound, Music,
etc.
Body
Where the main plot and the bulk of the video occurs.
B-Roll
All supplemental footage that is not part of the main plot of a film;
secondary footage, but reinforces the A-roll and main message.
E.g., establishing shots, archival images, stock footage, location
shots, cutaway shots, backgrounds, shots of inanimate objects.
Browser
The location of all of your assets (e.g., footage, audio, images) as
well as your timelines.
Chapters
Sections of the body of the video. A tool you can use to break down
the body, and guide the viewer through the story.
Color Correction
Adjusting footage from multiple cameras to match each other.
GLOSSARY O30
EXTRA
Color Grading
Creating an aesthetic look on top of your footage.
Conclusion
The end of the video, where the plot wraps up.
Effects
Tools you can apply to your video or audio to modify the look or
sound of the clips.
Two types of effects in Final Cut Pro:
1. Built-in Effects - standard effects that are already available to
every timeline clip. E.g., resize, move, rotate, trim, skew, crop, or
Ken Burns.
Clip Effects - additional effects that you can add onto video/
2.
audio clips. E.g., adding glows or blurs, film grain effects.
Exchange Folder
A shared folder to be able to send and receive files between team
members easily and efficiently.
Exports
Two types of exports:
1. Screener Exports - low quality, to share with friends for
feedback;
2. Master Exports - the best quality, final version (for uploading to
YouTube, for example).
GLOSSARY O 31
EXTRA
Frame.io
A website that is a collaborative workspace that allows you to
upload, review, and comment directly onto video clips. You can
then import those clips complete with feedback directly into Final
Cut Pro. Frame.io is a very efficient way to share feedback with your
team or collaborators on a video or video components.
Gaussian blur
An artistic blur effect that is used to reduce background noise in an
image or video clip.
GFX
Abbreviation of graphics.
Hook
A point of interest at the beginning of your video that captures
people’s attention and draws them in.
Inspector
Where you make changes to your clips in the timeline. E.g., zooming
in on a clip, editing a special effect you’ve added in.
Internal Storage
The storage inside your computer.
Two types: Hard Drive (HDD) & Solid State Drive (SSD).
• HDDs are traditional storage devices with spinning discs that
read and write data. They are slower, can be loud, and don’t last
as long. HDD usually provides more storage space at cheaper
prices than SSD.
• SSDs store data on instantly accessible memory chips. They
are faster, quieter, smaller, consume less energy, and are more
durable over the long term. SSDs are often more expensive and
typically are limited in the amount of storage space they can have
compared to a HDD.
*Note: for video editing purposes, a SDD will be preferable as it
won’t slow your workflow down.
GLOSSARY O 32
EXTRA
Intro (Introduction)
The opening segment and mark of the beginning of a video.
Between the hook and the body of the video that provides context
and an introduction to the main video.
Isolating Audio
An effect that allows you to isolate an audio clip (you can disable the
clip so it does not play, or disable everything else in the timeline so
that it is the only thing that plays).
Keyframes
Control points used to create changes and effects on a clip.
Keyword Collection
Category or identifier assigned to clips tagged with a specific
keyword to help organize clips. E.g., “A-roll” used as a keyword to
collect all footage that is available for a-roll sequences; “music” to
identify music tracks; “dialogue” to identify audio tracks of people
talking.
Magnetic Timeline
The timeline in Final Cut Pro adjusts clips to snap/fit around clips
that you drag into place. I.e., If you drag clips out of place, the
surrounding clips close up to fill the space.
Markers
Reference points you can place within clips to locate, identify,
annotate, and navigate to specific frames.
Metadata View
When sharing projects between two computers, ensuring the
Metadata view is set to “extended” to allow for all participants to be
able to access and edit the files.
GLOSSARY O33

Primary storyline
The horizontal, dark-gray track in the middle of the timeline (is also

magnetic.
Selects
The good, potentially usable clips extracted from the entire
