F5 Physics Chapter 4 Alfred Notes

Magnetic fields are produced by magnets and electric currents. Electromagnets are coils of wire that become magnetized when an electric current passes through. Increasing the number of wire turns or current strength increases the magnetic field. The direction of a magnetic field can be determined using the right-hand grip rule. A magnetic field is produced around a current-carrying wire and coil. The strength increases by increasing current or number of coil turns. An electromagnet uses a soft iron core to concentrate magnetic field lines. Electromagnets are used in doorbells, motors, and loudspeakers.
