Graphing Motion PDF

This document discusses graphical representations of motion through distance-time graphs and velocity-time graphs. Distance-time graphs show how far an object has traveled over time, with distance on the y-axis and time on the x-axis. The slope represents speed. Velocity-time graphs show an object's velocity over time, with velocity on the y-axis and time on the x-axis. The slope represents acceleration. Different graph shapes indicate if an object is stationary, moving at constant speed, or experiencing changing speed/acceleration.

GRAPHICAL

REPRESENTATION
OF MOTION
Graphing Motion
Graph gives a pictorial representation of a
motion of a body.

It can be
1. distance-time graph
2. velocity-time graph
Distance – Time Graph
➢ DISTANCE-TIME GRAPH shows how far an
object has traveled in a given time. It is a
simple line graph that denotes distance versus
time. The slope of a distance-time graph
represents the speed.
➢ Time is plotted on the x-axis.
➢ Distance is plotted on the y-axis.
Distance–Time Graph

d In this graph, time is

increasing to the
right but its distance
does not change, so
the object is not
moving or at rest.

Distance–Time Graph

d In this graph, time is

increasing to the
right and distance is
increasing constantly
with time. The
object moves at a
t constant speed.

d In this graph, the

object is moving with
increasing and non -
uniform speed

Velocity – Time Graph
➢ VELOCITY-TIME GRAPH shows the
velocity an object travels over a specific time.
The Velocity-Time looks much like Distance-
Time Graph. The slope of a velocity-time
graph represents the acceleration.
➢ Time is always plotted on the x-axis.
➢ Velocity is plotted on the y-axis.
Velocity–Time Graph

v In this velocity-time
graph, it shows that
the object is
increasing its
velocity. The
moving object is
t accelerating and
the acceleration is
constant
Velocity–Time Graph

v In this velocity-time
graph, a straight
horizontal line
means that the
object’s velocity is
constant. It is not
t changing over time.
It represents zero
acceleration.
Velocity–Time Graph

v Non -uniform
acceleration
