3.life Processes

1. The document discusses the nutrition processes in amoeba and paramecium. 2. In amoeba, nutrition involves ingestion through pseudopodia, digestion in a food vacuole, absorption and assimilation of nutrients, and egestion of undigested waste. 3. In paramecium, cilia are used to ingest food into the oral groove and gullet, forming a food vacuole where digestion occurs through enzymes. Absorption and assimilation of nutrients follows, with undigested waste expelled through the anal pore.

CLASS – X (SCIENCE) CHAPTER-2 – LIFE PROCESSES

Date: 11.04.2020
TOPIC :1. Nutrition in Amoeba

1. Amoeba is a unicellular and eukaryotic organism which is aquatic in nature.

2. The mode of nutrition in amoeba is holozoic.
3. Process of nutrition in amoeba
a) Ingestion: When amoeba comes in contact
with its food, it extends its finger like
projections called pseudopodia which fuse
over the food particle by forming a food-
vacuole.
b) Digestion: Inside the food vacuole, complex
food breaks in to small soluble molecule.
c) Absorption: The simple soluble molecules
absorbed by the cytoplasm of amoeba.
d) Assimilation: The amoeba utilizes the digested food to get energy, to perform its
life processes and also for its maturation and reproduction.
e) Egestion: The amoeba excrete the undidested food by rupturing its cell
membrane.

Topic-2: Nutrition in Paramecium

1. Paramecium is a tiny unicellular organism found in water. It follows holozoic mode of

nutrition.
2. Ingestion : Paramecium engulfs food by the
use of cilia. Ciliais a hair like structure present
on surface on body of paramecium. Food is
ingested by cilia through oral groove into
gullet. The food is ingested with a little
surrounding water to form a food vacuole
3. Digestion: In Paramecium, food is digested in food vacuole by the digestive enzymes
released by cytoplasm.
4. Absorption: The digested food present in the food vacuole of Paramecium is
absorbed directly into the cytoplasm by diffusion. After absorption of food, the food
vacuole shrinks.
5. Assimilation: The absorbed food nutrients is stored and utilised later for synthesis of
energy.
6. Egestion: The undigested food is expelled out through anal pore.

ASSERTION - REASON TYPE OF QUESTIONS

 The question no. 5 to 6 consists of two statements. One is Assertion(A),

which is followed by Reason(R). Select the correct answer to these questions
from codes (a), (b), (c), (d) as given below.
(a) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of the assertion.
(b) Both A and R are true but R is not the correct explanation of the assertion.
(c) A is true but R is false.
(d) A is false but R is true.

Q5. Assertion: Ingestion in amoeba takes place with the help of pseudopodia.
Reason: Pseudopodia of amoeba are the finger like projections which help it to engulf
food.
Q6. Assertion: Paramecium engulfs food by the use of cilia.
Reason: The undigested food of Paramecium is expelled out through anal pore.
