Tutorial Sheet 6 Answer

This document contains (1) hints and answers to calculus problems from Tutorial Sheet 6 of the Mathematics department at IIT Ropar for the first semester of the 2022-2023 academic year. It provides worked out solutions to 12 problems related to finding stationary points, applying the second derivative test to functions of two variables, finding absolute maximum and minimum values, and evaluating definite integrals. The problems cover topics like maxima, minima, and optimization of functions.

1. Hint: First of all find the stationary points and then apply second order derivative test
for two variables.

(a) Ans: (0, 0), (−3, 0), (0, 23 ) are saddle points and (−1, 12 ) is local minimum.
√ √ √ √
(b) Ans: (0, 0) is neither maximum nor minimum,( 2, − 2) and (− 2, 2) are local
maximum.

2. Hint: Use second order derivative test for two variables.
