Assignment 5

1) The document is an assignment for a mechanical engineering department that includes questions about journal bearings, self-aligning ball bearings, spherical roller bearings, hydrostatic lubrication, thin film bearings, and desirable lubricant properties. 2) It asks the student to explain bearing characteristic number, bearing modulus, and classifications of antifriction bearings. 3) One question involves calculating the artificial cooling required for a journal bearing design based on load, speed, dimensions, oil properties, and operating temperatures.

Part-B 3×5=15
1 Explain the following terms as applied to journal bearings :(a) 1 Apply
Bearing characteristic number ; and (b) Bearing modulus. (3)
2 A tentative design of a journal bearing results in a diameter of 75 mm 1 Analysis
and a length of 125 mm for supporting a load of 20 kN. The shaft (4)
runs at 1000 r.p.m. The bearing surface temperature is not to exceed
75°C in a room temperature of 35°C. The oil used has an absolute
viscosity of 0.01 kg/m-s at the operating temperature. Determine the
amount of artificial cooling required in watts. Assume d/c = 1000.
3 Write short note on classifications and different types of antifriction 1 Apply
bearings. (3)
