1 Why are gear drives superior to belt drives or chain drives? The 1 Understand
advantages of gear drives? (2)
2 1 Analyze
How are gears classified?
(4)
3 1 Understand
Illustrate the materials for making gears?

(6)
Part-B 3×5=15
1 Design a pair of bevel gears to transmit 12kW at 1440 rpm. The 1 Apply
reduction ratio desired is 5:1. The pinion has 20 teeth and material for (3)
pinion and gear is C45 steel. Take service factor as 1.25.
2 Design a worm gear drive to transmit 40 kW at 500 rpm of worm. 1 Analysis
The (4)
speed ratio is 25. The worm gear is made of phosphor bronze and that
of worm is made of case-hardened carbon steel 10C4. Also determine
the efficiency of the drive.
3 A helical gear with 30 degree helix angle has to transmit 35kW at 1 Apply
1500 rpm with a speed reduction ratio 2:5. If the pinion has 24 teeth (3)
determine the necessary module, pitch diameter and face width for 20
degree full depth teeth. Assume 15Ni 2Cr 1 Mo15 material for both
pinion and wheel.
