Fluid Mechanics Lab Report 5

1. The report details a fluid mechanics laboratory experiment using a differential manometer to compare pressures at different points. Students took measurements of the manometric fluid levels and calculated the difference in pressures between two tanks. 2. Graphs of the results showed the theoretical and actual difference in pressures were close, though some trials had errors of over 5%. 3. A differential manometer can detect imbalances in pipeline pressure caused by leaks, demonstrating its real-world application in industry for quality control and safety. Further trials could help reduce experimental errors.

A. Introduction
Differential manometers can be used to compare the pressures at two places in the same
pipe or between two pipes.

B. Objectives (Refer to Lab Manual posted in Canvas)

1. Determine the change of elevations or deflection of the colored liquid in the U-tube
manometer.
2. Determine the difference in pressure of the two containers with water (where the two
funnels rest) using a differential manometer.

C. Computations (handwritten)

D. Presentation of results <insert filled-out tables and graphs in this section>

E. Discussion of the Results <discuss the observed trend of the results>

As point 'a' has a higher pressure than point 'b,' the heavier liquid in the left arm will be forced
downward, which will cause the heavier manometric liquid to rise in the right leg, and vice
versa.
F. Conclusion <explain the relationship of each parameter to the final result>
The pressurized fluid enters the U-tube manometer after passing through the pipes. The
manometer fluid would thus be equal in the right and left limbs depending on the respective
pressure in the pipes. This suggests that the pressure is the same in both pipes. If the left limb's
manometric fluid level is low while the right limb's is high, this suggests that the pressure in the
left-hand pipe is higher. If the right limb's manometric fluid level is low while the left limb's is
high, this suggests that the pressure in the right-hand pipe is higher.
G. Application < Give an example of the application of the principle in the industry or even in
the simplest daily life activity.
A differential manometer can be used to find pipeline breaches since a leak would lead to an
imbalance in pressure, which would throw off the manometric fluid's balance.
H. Recommendation <Discuss possible source of error in the experiment and recommend steps
or appropriate measures to avoid these errors>
Due to the high percentage of errors on some of the trials, the graph may not be accurate.
