Introduction
❖ The explorer Ferdinand Magellan set foot on the islands on
March 16, 1521and named the islands the “Archipelago of St.
Lazarus.” On the day he first sighted land, it was a Saturday, the
eve of Passion Sunday, when in the old Roman liturgy, the gospel
was the resurrection of St. Lazarus.
❖ The first documented Catholic Mass in the Philippines was
held on March 31, 1521, Easter Sunday. It was conducted by
Father Pedro de Valderrama.
❖ On April 14, 1521, Magellan spearheaded the conversion of
Rajah Humabon and his consort Harah Amihan, who took the
baptismal names Carlos and Juana (after the Spanish king and
queen mother). He planted the cross on the island of Cebu,
cradle of Christianity in the Philippines.
❖ The name that stuck however was “Las Islas Filipinas” (the
Philippine Islands), given by Ruy Lopez de Villalobos who
headed one of the follow-up expeditions after the death of
Magellan in the hands of the natives in the Battle of Mactan.
❖ Pagkatapos ng 40 taon, dumating ang
bagong ekspedisyon sa pamumuno ng isang
Mehikano na si Miguel Lopez de Legazpi,
kasama ang mga paring Augustino na sina
Padre Fray Andres de Urdaneta at Padre
Fray Martin de Rada mula sa Orden ni San
Agustin (OSA).
❖ Layunin ng mga Agustino na itatag at
palaganapin ang Kristiyanismo sa kapuluan.
Abril 27, 1565, dumating ang unang misyon
sa isla ng Cebu sa pangunguna ni Padre
Diego de Herrera, OSA at sinimulang
ipinalaganap ang pananampalataya.

in Manila was established and became the
center of Augustinian efforts to evangelize the
Philippines
1572, dumating ang misyon sa Lalawigan ng
Bulacan sa pangunguna ni Padre Diego
