ECSACON
The ECSACON conference was held in Eswatini from the 13 -17 September 2022 with the theme
‘’,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,”
ECSACON was established in 1990 by the conference of health ministers with its main focus to
strengthen and empower nursing and midwifery with skills on their day to day activities. Its
headquatters are in Arusha (Tanzania).
The ECSACON conference is normally held after every 2 years from different countries. The next
conference will be held in LESOTHO (2024) then RWANDA (2026).
ESCACON is one of five colleges of the East , Central and Southern Africa Health Community (ECSA-HC):
3. COPECSA: The College of Pathologists of East, Central and Southern Africa, and
4. ECSACOG: The East, Central and Southern Africa College of Gynaecologists and Obstetricians
The 4 pillars/ faculities of ECSACON were also discussed during the presentation and those faculty were:
Education : Ensures countries have a core curriculum content tool in improving quality of
patient care
Clinical practice: Focuses on day to day activities (hands on) on providing services to patients
Leadership and management : Provide leadership and management of the organisation hence
achieving the set goals
Research : Focus on gathering of information and facts for the advancement of nursing and
midwifery.
From the 4 faculities mentioned above, during voting process a motswana representative managed
to win the position of “faculty of education”
The ECSACON president further eleborated on the emphasis of further studies by the nurses and
midwifery across the members.
The president officially launched the ECSACON accreditation framework and tools to the attendees
and it was to be distributed across the country that belongs to ECSACON in the long run. She further
noted that the training programs will start by January 2023.
The other aspect was for delegate to join and be members of ECSACON as they will benefit from
services that come along with the oganisation.
Access to continuing education, certification opportunities, specialty journals and conferences that
are critical to continuing competencies which, in turn, lead to better patient, personal and career
outcomes.
Networking opportunities with people who are specifically in your kind of work and mentors within
your profession and access to experts
One also gets an opportunity to participate in committees that make decisions and policies that
impact nursing and midwifery responsibilities and practice
Furthermore various abstract were presented at the coference and amongst them the was Sexual
Reproductive Health, Mental heath, violence at work place etc
Nurses should specialise on their field of interest for best service delivery
Nurses to not work for long hours for proper service delivery and excellent care
Good wages to be revised for nurses
