EXERCISE 1 / #1

Main Keywords: Sentiment, statistics, quantitative, cultural, differentiation, replicable,

machine learning

Secondary Keywords: NLP research, sentiment analysis, meme text data, computer
science, language analysis, natural language processing techniques, online
communities, internet culture, communication, Common Good, harmful online
behavior, data analysis, and future career.

EXERCISE 1 / #2

The research I plan to look into will examine the possibilities of employing algorithms
to distinguish between memes and non-memes through computational analysis of
phrase syntax and structure. This study intends to investigate whether there are any
underlying memetic traits by comparing the sentence patterns and structures of
memes and non-memes. To find any patterns that might distinguish memes from
non-memes, the project will involve a comprehensive analysis of text corpora using
natural language processing (NLP) techniques. The ability of machine learning
algorithms to accurately differentiate between memes and non-memes will also be
investigated in this study. The findings of this study may have consequences for
enhancing meme recognition algorithms and our comprehension of the
fundamental elements that give a text its memetic qualities. Another goal of this
study is to identify any observable patterns that can discriminate between memes
and non-memes by comparing the qualitative qualities of each. A comprehensive
investigation of text corpora using qualitative techniques like content analysis and
discourse analysis will also be part of the research to find any underlying themes or
characteristics that set memes apart from non-memes.

EXERCISE 1 / #3
Historical Lens: The study can examine how memes have changed through time and
how the advent of new technology and communication channels has affected their
structures and patterns in order to explore the research issue via a historical
perspective. The study might examine the development of memes from their
beginnings in online forums and communities to their current widespread use on
social media platforms. The study might also look at how memes' properties have
evolved over time in response to societal and cultural shifts. Any patterns or
structures particular to particular eras or civilizations may come to light through
historical examination.

Conceptual Lens: A conceptual lens could be employed to investigate the

consequences of memes in society and how they connect to language, culture, and
communication. This may look at how memes are used to represent complex ideas
and emotions, as well as how they help internet users establish a shared cultural
identity. Furthermore, the study might look into how memes are employed as a
weapon for political, social, and cultural commentary. This would all be determined
through the same NLP techniques I plan to use throughout the main portion of my
original research.

Case Study Lens: To investigate the research question via a case study lens, it could
prove beneficial to concentrate on a specific group of memes or a specific online
platform where memes are dominant, such as Reddit or Twitter. This case study
technique would allow for a more in-depth examination of the distinctive traits and
qualities of memes and non-memes in a specified context. A case study, for
example, could examine the usage of memes in political debate on Twitter during a
given election cycle (Biden v. Trump for example). The investigation might identify
any trends or underlying traits specific to this sort of meme by evaluating the phrase
syntax and structure of political memes in this context.

Rough Research Outline

I. Introduction
● Explain the background and motivation for the research, including my
personal reasons for doing so
○ This issue combines my interests in computer science and language
analysis, which is why I am so excited about it. I can learn a lot about
NLP techniques and apply them to a specific and pertinent dataset by
investigating sentiment analysis of meme text data. This study may
also be pertinent to me throughout my stay at Cal since it may deepen
my knowledge of how language is used online and further ongoing talks
regarding internet culture and communication. This research can
contribute to a safer and more inclusive online environment by
identifying and addressing harmful online behavior. Also, by improving
my technical abilities, my research in R4B will help me in the future.
● Discuss the research question and objectives

II. Literature Review

● Review existing research on meme recognition and natural language
processing
● Identify gaps in the literature and explain how this research addresses them
● Include the historical aspect study as listed in the implementation in the
above section

III. Methodology
● Discuss the corpus of text data used in the study, and how I acquired it
● Explain the NLP techniques used to analyze the text data
● Explain the coding techniques used to identify any unique characteristics of
memes

This text provides an analysis of the textual semantics of the Arabic language in
comparison to English. This provides context into how sentences with humor are
constructed. With this, I can compare frameworks of different languages to help
build a model of recognizing humor in written text through syntax and sentence
semantics.

The University of Michigan's Survey Research Center developed the Index of

Consumer Sentiment (ICS) in the 1940s to quantify people's feelings towards the
state of the economy. The ICS indirectly predicts the direction of the economy and
has been noted to give investors an unfair advantage if they have this information
before others. This study was conducted using sentiment analysis, the same method
of research I plan to use.
