Cot in Science 7

This document contains a lesson plan for a Grade 7 science class on concentration of solutions. The lesson plan outlines the objectives, content, procedures, materials, and evaluation for the class. The objectives are for students to understand properties of solutions, prepare mixtures of different concentrations according to use and material availability, and calculate percentage by mass of solutions. The procedures include introducing the topic, having students work in groups on percentage by mass problems, explaining an example, and relating concentration to cooking and baking recipes. The evaluation contains multiple choice questions testing the students' understanding of percentage by mass calculations and the importance of accurate measurements in cooking.

A. ELICIT: What are the two components of solution?

What are different ways in expressing concentration of solution?
Show the different mathematical expressions for expressing
percentage.
B. ENGAGE: What is concentration of solution?
Show a sample of solution
How will you describe the concentration of the solution?
Show them the formula for percent by mass
Give sample problem for percent by mass
Solve the sample problem

C. EXPLORE: Divide the class into 3 groups

Give each group a solving problem on percent by mass
Read and analyze problem 1-3.
Write the given, formula, solution and answer with correct unit.
Fill in the table with the given data.
Answer the guide questions correctly.
Each group will explain their work

D. EXPLAIN: 1. A peso coin has a mass of 5.5 grams. How many grams of
copper are present in one-peso coin containing 75% by
mass?
2. What may happen to the mass of a peso coin if more copper
will be added in the solution? Why?

E. ELABORATE Concentration of solution can be expressed quantitatively by

determining its percent. Percent by mass is the ratio of the
mass of solute in a given mass of the solvent to determine the
Percent by Mass, the formula is

Percent by Mass = Mass of solute x 100%

Mass of solution
To determine the Mass of Solute, the formula is

mass of solution = % by Mass x Mass solution

100%
To determine the mass of the solution, the formula is

Mass of Solution =mass of solute x 100%

% by mass

To determine the mass of the solution, the formula is and to

determine the mass of solvent simply get the difference between
the mass of the solution and the mass of the solute

F. APPLICATION Maja Blanca is a very common dessert in the Philippines. It is

sometimes known as coconut pudding. The nutritional value of
this dessert lies on the coconut milk. In about 100 grams of
Maja Blanca, there are 14 grams of fats, 2 grams of protein, 25
grams of carbohydrates, and 18 grams of sugar.
Have you gone to a party? What type of food you usually
observed on the table? Let us integrate good values of tasting the
food offered on the table even if it is not common to you. For
example, after tasting pastries, is it too sweet for you? What will
you do? Don’t throw it away.
In baking pastries, there is always a ratio for the amount of
baking soda and baking powder with the amount of flour. Why
do you think it is important to measure the correct mass of the
substances that you will use in baking? Well, the purpose to
measure the correct mass of the substances that you will use in
baking is to produce a light, airy, flaky, and buttery pastry. Too
much flour nor water in the solution will produce a crumbly,
tough, dry, flat, and flavorless pastry.

Same with cooking Maja Blanca, there is always a ratio for the
amount of coconut milk / milk and cornstarch with the amount
of sugar. In your activity 3, you found out that the concentration
of the solution through percent by mass is almost 30%. To
produce thick, creamy, tasty and nutritious Maja Blanca, you
need to measure the correct mass of the substances needed in
cooking this delicacy. Thus, you learned now the importance of
measuring the correct mass of the ingredients needed in a
certain recipe.
Read, analyze, compute, then encircle the letter of the
G.EVALUATION: correct answer.
1. Suppose a solution was prepared by mixing 20 g of sugar
into 75 g of
water. Which of the following will be used to determine the
concentration
of the solution?

2. Percent by mass is the ratio of the mass of the solute with
the mass of the
solution. Which of the following formula will be used if mass
of the
solution is not given in the problem?
A. mass of solute x 100%
% by mass
B. % by Mass x mass of solution

percent by mass
concentration of 20%. How much of the sugar is present
in this solution
if 240 g of water is used?
A. 40 g B. 50 g C. 60 g
5. In cooking Maja Blanca, there is always a ratio for the
amount of coconut
