EFFECTS IN DIFFICULTY ON READING AND COMPREHENSION OF GRADE 7 AND 8 STUDENTS AT

URDANETA CITY NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL DUE TO COVID-19 LOCKDOWN

1. CONTEXT AND RATIONALE

Distance education has always carried problems; however, some of the problems revealed as a
result of the study are related specifically to Covid-19 pandemic period. The COVID-19 pandemic
has been an unprecedented disruption in students’ academic development. Young children at risk
of reading difficulty encounter impediments in understanding and using foundational skills such
as phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. The underlying cause
placing children at risk of reading difficulty can be biological and environmental. Elementary
school students were literally stuck during the pandemic and the education system rapidly
transformed into modular Learning. The grade four students are those who are affected when
the pandemic arise, all of the elementary students are using the module made by DEPEd. The
Reading and Comprehension are literally affected throughout their 5th and 6th grade and now
that we are in our new normal class, they are being left behind (grade seven and eight students)
so the school has started with the great idea of implementing "The Reading Center Program",
which teaches them how to read for just two to three hours a week, this will be a great help to
students who suffer from reading and understanding. Having a comprehension adds meaning to
what is read by anyone else. Reading comprehension occurs when words on a page are not just
mere words but thoughts and ideas. Comprehension makes reading enjoyable, fun, and
informative. It is needed to succeed in school, work, and life in general. It is an activity that is very
important for children and students alike, especially when they are in a development process.
Reading expands our vocabulary, it improves our focus, memory skills, and self-esteem.
The Study found that students whose teachers used assessment data to customize their earning
significantly, Improved in Reading over similar schools not employing personalized instructional
Approaches. Research shows that parent involvement, especially in activities that directly support
their children's school success, is correlated with reading achievement. Parents can do a great
deal to build their children's literacy development. They can read to children from infancy
through the elementary grades. They can monitor their children's home reading and ask teachers
to require regular reading as homework. They can take children to the library and borrow or
purchase books.

The goal of having a comprehension especially to the students is not Just for their academic
purposes but also to develop their skills in understanding for them to use it in their daily lives, to
boost their confidence and self esteem when talking to someone or doing some paper works.
Therefore, in a class when a student is not knowledgeable enough and cannot read and
comprehend, sometimes they're the source of laughter but this is not what it meant to be, it
must stop now. Teachers must focus on enhancing their skill in reading and comprehension for
them not to be the victims of bullying.
