a. Apply the gravity model to calculate the interchange volumes. Assume C=2.
b. Apply the gravity model to calculate the interchange volumes. Assume C=1.

c. Apply the gravity model to calculate the interchange volumes. Assume C=4.
d. Write down your observations on the difference among the results in the above three
situations
As C increases people becomes more sensitive to money so they choose trips closer to
them (lowest Wij)
Problem 2 (60%)

A base-year trip-generation study obtained the data shown relating to the daily work
person-trip production per individual (Y) and the household size (X)

X 1 2 4 6 8 10
Y 1.3 1.1 0.9 0.6 0.4 0.3

(a) (10%) Calibrate the relationship Y=(a+bX) . What are the values of a and b?

Y= 1.34986301369863 - 0.112876712328767 the household size

T0 = 25.6849844 T1 = -13.0351031416677
A = 1.34986301369863
B = - 0.112876712328767
(b) (10%) Calibrate the relationship Y=1/(m+nX). What are the values of m and n?

Y= 0.253818479845877+ 0.282791029366372 the household size

T0 = 1.2299810098365 T1 = 8.31689671061069
M = 0.253818479845877
N = 0.282791029366372

(c) (5%) Which of the above two relationships do you think is more appropriate to use to
forecast the daily work person-trip production? Justify your answer based on the
goodness of fit, the significance of the coefficients, etc. Assume that the tcritical values
for a 95% confidence level are  4.

 Equation 2 is the most appropriate because T0 is not significant and T1 is

significant but in Equation 1 T0 is significant .
 Equation 2 has Y intercept smaller (good indicator) than 1.
 Equation 1 coefficient of X is negative which is an error.
(d) (10%) Apply the best selected equation in part (c) to calculate the total work trips
produced by a residential zone (1) (at the target year) that has the following household
structure:

Household size 1 2 3 4 5 6 7
Number of Households 100 200 230 130 100 40 30

P1 =

(e) (25%) Calculate the trip interchange volumes between zone 1 and the other
attraction zones. Assume the attractiveness values as shown in the table below.

Trip distribution form of the Production Constrained Model is:

The figure below summarizes the existing (base year) travel time in a network of four
zones 1, 2, 3 and 4. The target year travel-times are expected to be 35% higher than
that of the base year. Zone 1 is the only production zone. All zones (1, 2, 3 and 4)
compete to attract the trips produced by Zone 1. The impedance function, Fij is as
follows:

Fij = 1/WijC, where Wij is the travel time (in minutes) between any two zones i and j. The
travel time between any two zones i and j can be estimated from the figure below. For
instance, W11 = 10+10 = 20 (minutes), W12 = 40, W34 = 50, etc. Assume c = 1.3.
