Tutorial 09

1. The document provides instructions for solving problems involving natural frequencies of vibration for multi-degree of freedom systems using approximate numerical methods. It includes determining natural frequencies for 5 different systems shown in figures using Dunkerley's equation, equating kinetic and potential energies, and setting up a matrix equation. 2. Solutions are provided for determining the natural frequency of the 2 mass system in Figure P9.1, plotting the natural frequency versus ratio of displacements for the 3 mass system in Figure P9.2, and finding the fundamental frequencies of beams in Figures P9.3 and P9.4 using Dunkerley's equation. 3. For the 3 mass system in Figure P9.5,

THEORY OF MACHINE AND MECHANISM II

TUTORIAL NO: 9
APPROXIMATE NUMERICAL METHODS
1. Determine the natural frequency of vibration for the system shown in Figure P9.1.
2. Write kinetic and potential energy expressions for the system shown in Figure P9.2, when k1 =
k, k2 = 3k, k3 = 2k; m1 = m, m2 = 2m and determine the equation for 2 by equating the two
energies. Letting x2/x1 = n, plot 2 versus n. Pick off the maximum and minimum values of 2
and the corresponding values of n, and show that they represent the two natural modes of the
system.

beam shown in Figure P9.4.

5. For the system shown in Figure P9.5, k1 = 3k, k2 = 2k, k3 = k and m1 = 4m, m2 = 2m and m3 =
m. Set up the matrix equation and determine the three principal modes by iteration.
