Sheet 3

This document contains 6 problems about mechanical vibrations. Each problem provides a diagram of a mechanical system and asks students to derive the equation of motion using Newton's laws and energy conservation principles, find the natural frequency, and write an expression for the system response. The problems cover simple pendulums, coupled masses and springs, and rotating systems like pulleys and rocker arms. Students are asked to simplify systems, determine equivalent masses and spring constants, and analyze small oscillations.

1) The simple pendulum is pivoted at point o in Fig.1. If m=2 kg, k=1200 N/m, L=0.5m and
the initial angular displacement and velocity of the system are 0.5 rad and 3 rad/s. Assuming
the mass of the rod to be negligible, and for small oscillation:
a) Find the equation of motion using newton’s law and energy conservation principle.
b) Estimate the system natural frequency (ωn).
c) write an expression for the system response.

2) The simple pendulum is pivoted at point o in Fig. 2. If m=2.5 kg, k=1000 N/m, L=1m.
Assuming the mass of the rod to be negligible, and for small oscillation. Find the equation of
motion using newton’s law and energy conservation principle and the natural frequency ωn. If
the initial angular displacement and velocity of the system are π/8 rad and 4 rad/s, write down
an expression for the system response.

3) Determine meq and keq for the system of Fig.3 when x, the downward displacement of the
block, measured from the system's equilibrium position is used as the generalized coordinate.
Using newton’s law and energy conservation principle, derive the equation of motion and find
the natural frequency. Note that m=10 kg, m1=20 kg, k=2000 N/m and r =0.1 m. After the

displacement and velocity are 0.01 m and 5 m/s respectively.

the system’s equilibrium position.
a) Express the potential energy of the system at an arbitrary instant in terms of θ.
b) Express the kinetic energy of the system at an arbitrary instant in terms of θ.
c) Write down the equation of motion and estimate the system natural frequency.
