INDEX:
1. Scope/Introduction of Work
2. Responsibilities
3. Method of Excavation
5. Emergency Preparedness
1. Scope/Introduction of Work:
The scope of work applies to all excavations related to Trial Pit/Trenches with depth up to
required level in all kind of sub strata including stacking in safe place and refilling after
completion of work activities.
2. Responsibilities:
The Project Engineer/site engineer is responsible for the supervision of deep excavations
Trial Pit / Trench. Project manager will bear the overall responsibility. Project engineer/site
engineer will assist Project Manager in reviewing the Method Statement submitted by
contractor and approve the same and also to supervise the excavation works as stipulated
in the procedure.
3. Method of Excavation:
Demarcate the excavation setting out plan with reference co-ordinates and levels and
prevent the damage in surrounding with maintaining accuracy.
Prior to start of work, statutory approvals shall be obtained from the Local Concerned
Authority as applicable.
Cable or utilities scanning has to be done in order to avoid any damage to the existing S&T
cables, high tension cables etc to avoid the damage/injury/cut of cables at running railway
station.
Various cable jointing kit (S&T, high tension, telecommunication cables etc) along
with railway approvedLicense holding agency & jointer to perform the repairing
Job, in case of exigency at site.
2
The locations/areas for trial pits/ trenches will be marked on drawings after carting out
appropriate site inspection using detecting machines/equipments so that S&T cables &
other underground services can be protected from damages/cut/injuries.
No excavating machines will be deployed for excavation of any trial pit/trenches, it must
be executed manually.
Start the excavation from one end and proceed to another end in layers such as one
meter depth layers.
If the excavation depth exceeds 2.0 meters depth, it needs to protect the sides of
excavation by shoring & strutting in loose soil to avoid any sort of accident at site.
To provide slope not less than 1:1.5 with intermediate berms and the slope have to be
protected by planting grass etc.
After the completion of excavation 5 meters below the first strut level, install the first
strutas per requirement. The procedure may be repeated till the bottom of excavation.
Stacking the soil away from the excavation edge to prevent soil co l la p se to the
excavation area, where the removal and refilling is approachable.
To avoid containment of dust, regular water sprinkling and covering of soil stacking
area with canvas.
In case of soil disposal, appoint banks man to guide the machinery movement.
Appoint signal man when there is movement of machine for shifting of excavated
earth..
Provision for dewatering of underground water to be made with sufficient pumps, if
water level is found during the excavation.
All the excavation area is to be barricaded with GI hand railing and sign boards such as
“deep excavation is in progress/ stay away/ Caution boards” to be kept in
Hindi/English/local languages which can understand by workers easily.
Sufficient flood lights will be provided at regular intervals.
In case of over excavation, fill the extra depth with PCC to maintain the level.
3
After the completion of excavation inform the Architect/Engineer to visit the site for
checking to proceed further.
The contractor indemnifies the employer of all liability arising out of the demolition,
permission from concerned local Authorities, transportation, collection/disposal of
debris activity etc. as per contract. All the claims arising out of any action taken by
them will be handled solely by them.
Proper safety signages like Work In Progress/Danger/Men at Work etc. will be placed at
regular intervals.
Deployed Workers/Supervising Staff will be equipped with safety belts, safety helmets,
boots, Safety Jacket, hand glove etc. during excavation of Trial Pit/Trenches work at
site/area.
Portable Fire Extinguisher/Medical First Aid Boxes/Portable Fire Alarm system will be
provided/placed at site/area.
Name and address of Local Hospital will be displayed to approach in case of emergency.
Existing services, pipelines and fittings which are in use and need to be maintained will
be defined & shall be protected in an appropriate manner to prevent any damage or
clogging during excavation.
4
Adequate precautions will be made to prevent the fire/explosions if caused by gas or
vapour etc.
Periodically, water will be sprayed at the required places to avoid dust spreading during
excavation & shifting of excavated soil.
Trial Pit/Trenches location survey should be done & must be noted all existing services
in & around the area and adjacent to the site whether they are overhung or
underground.
During excavation, the area will be kept as a restricted area to allow the fall of debris
from the minimum height.
Any Cables or Utilities scanning will be done before, in order to avoid any damage to
the existing (S&T Cable, High-Tension Cable, Telecommunication Cables etc.) to avoid
to the damage/injury/cut of cable at running railway station.
Various cable jointing kits (S&T, High Tension, Medium Voltage, Optic Fibre Cables etc.)
along with railway approved licence agency and jointer to perform the repairing job, in
case of exigency work at the running railway station.
All the workers at the excavation shall wear PPE at all times such as Safety
helmets, safety shoes, Safety harness or belts, Gloves etc.
5
All the workers have to be briefed about the excavation and safety measures
required to be taken during excavation.
Deploy enough banks man, signal man if there are many excavators/dumpers for
shifting of excavated soil.
The soil shall be stacked away from the edge of excavation to prevent collapse of soil on
to workers working at bottom.
All the excavation area shall be barricaded with GI hand railing and should be strong
enough to take the loading of human beings slanting on it.
All the excavation areas to be provided with enough flood lights, the light any
point should not be less than 150amps.
Close supervision and recording by site engineer/supervisor is required.
Proper access with hand railing to be provided to the bottom of excavation.
In case of dry weather, Sprinkle water to prevent dust pollution, and cover the soil
stacking area with canvas.
All the machinery has to be checked by the operators every morning before the start
of work and to fill the check lists with signature.
The speed limit of dumpers working in construction area to be controlled.
The dumpers drivers will ensure not to collapse of soil from dumper or flying of dust to
atmosphere/environment.
Toolbox Meeting:
A toolbox meeting will be ensured every day at site to discuss the daily targets and area of
work.
Safety and emergency preparedness will be ensured for workers to ensure ‘Zero Harm’ at
site.
All the tools and tackles will be inspected and checked for any defects at the beginning of the
work.
6
Safety Engineer will ensure that workers will be using protective gear all the time and there
will be no compromise with this regards.
Supervisors/ safety Engineer will be always at the site to ensure for safe work going on at all
height.
Discussion about job specific hazards & required its control for safety.
7
Emergency Preparedness:
First Aid Box:
1. First aid will be given to injured person at the site.
2. The name and contact number of the nominated first aired (s) will be displaced to call during emergency.
3. First aid Kit will be placed at our Site office and at Working site which will display the below mentioned
image for easy identification at site.
4. Name & address of Local nearest Hospital will also be displaced to approach in emergency.
