The Notting Hill Carnival (Listening – video - 1mn)
SUMMARY (Recap)
The document is a report broadcast on the European TV channel Euronews in August 2018.
It is about the Notting Hill Carnival, one of the biggest street festival in Europe. Notting Hill
is a cosmopolitan neighbourhood located West London. The carnival celebrates Caribbean
roots and culture as well as* the ethnic diversity in London
It was started in the 1960s, after street riots*, by the migrants recently arrived from the
Caribbeans. They wanted to promote multiculturalism and peaceful relationship. They
wanted people to get together and have a good time (have fun). Year after year, the
carnival has grown and it is now a massive celebration that attracts people from around the
country and the world ! They film and take pictures of the decorated floats.
During the carnival, you can see the parade with people wearing colourful costumes, steel
drums bands playing music and so on (etc.). People party : they dance, sing and eat.
*As well as = ainsi que / street riots = émeutes dans la rue / to grow = to become bigger
