NEBULIZER PROCEDURE PURPOSE: To deliver medication by a fine mist that is inhaled directly into the lungs.

INDICATION: For patients with asthma, difficulty of breathing, chronic bronchitis, chronic lung disease, COPD and other respiratory disease. PROCEDURE: Before giving inhalation to the patient the NURSE should: 1. Check doctors order (if the patients must do the inhalation at the clinic or at home) 2. Explain the procedure to the patient (for children below 5 years old, explain the procedure to their parents.) 3. Inform them about the price and let them sit on the chair or inside the room where you can perform the procedure. 4. Check doctors order for the right dose of medicine (if its Vento line 2.5 / 5 ml or Adrenaline) 5. Get the medicine at the pharmacy (remember to give the ID number of the patient) 6. Prepare the medication and things needed. 7. Wash hands. 8. Check carefully the order (if doctor indicate to use O2 or not) 9. Prepare the medication. Withdraw the right dose of the medicine from the ampule or nebule. (If the patient will use a half dose and doctor order 1 time inhalation, the nurse must discard the medicine. DO NOT USE IT WITH OTHER PATIENT. And if doctor indicate 2 times, keep the medicine. Make sure the sterility of the medicine. Cover the tip of it.) 10. Place the medication in the medicine chamber and add with 2ml of Sodium Chloride/NSS (amount of NSS added depends on doctors order). Securely close the lid to the medicine chamber. 11. Position the patient in a comfortably seated position. For small ones, ask the mother or father to hold the baby and sit on their lap. 12. Place nebulizer on the table or chair and plug into electrical outlet with ON/OFF switch in the OFF position. 13. Attached the mouthpiece or facemask to the medicine chamber with an adapter. 14. Connect one end of the tubing to the medicine chamber and the other end to the nipple on the nebulizer compressor. 15. If doctor indicate with Oxygen, place the patient to the Room where the O2 tank is located. Check O2 tank and water chamber. Connect the tubing to the O2 tank and regulate the flow rate according to doctors order. 16. Turn on the compressor switch and watch for the medication mist to flow from the mouthpiece or mask.

17. If the mask is used, place the mask over the patients mouth and nose, securing it comfortably with the elastic strap that is attached. 18. If the mouthpiece is used, have the patient place the lips around the mouthpiece to make seal. 19. Instruct the patient to breathe in and out through the mouth slowly and completely. 20.Monitor patient for changes in respiratory rate or effort. Initiate emergency procedures if indicated. 21. Continue to have the nebulizer dispense the medication until all the medication has disappeared from the chamber. 22.Document the procedure accurately in the PMSI. 23.After finished the procedure, return the patients documents to the doctors room and inform the patient to wait for the doctor for reassessment. 24.Disassemble the medicine, adapter, mouthpiece, or mask. Return the machine on its proper place; give the mask or mouthpiece to the housekeeper for cleaning and sterilization. *
