CHRISTMAS 2022
Members of the club were delighted to join the superb Christmas Festival on Saturday November 19th,
along with Santa and his sleigh. The event, organised by Folkestone Town Council, was terrific, with
hundreds enjoying the chance to meet Santa and see the lights switched on and later fireworks.

Secretary Bob sent this message to all our voluntary elves:

This is a big thank you to all the elves who contributed towards such an excellent 2022 Christmas.
You will have seen at first hand the pleasure that our runs gives to both adults and children and the
feedback is once again excellent.
We have raised a total of £7,229.22 to help those local people who need a little help. We have already
distributed 130 parcels in Folkestone this Christmas.
None of this would be possible without a great team effort so once again thanks for all that you did.
If you brought along a friend or colleague please also give them our thanks.

CHRISTMAS PARCELS
Many congratulations to all involved in the preparation and delivery of the Christmas Parcels, particularly Sam
Wraight, Dave Taylor and the ladies from Inner Wheel. We had great support this year from Saga, Asda and the
Yacht Club and the 130 parcels were very gratefully received by Home Start and 12 local primary schools, who
ensured that they went to the most deserving families.

RACE NIGHT
Congratulations to PP Andrew Beggs, who organised another very successful Race Night back in November. The
Tote was run by Sam Wraight and Ben Sharp.

UPDATE FROM PRESIDENT RAY

It’s been another very busy couple of months! In addition to all the Christmas Collections activity, I
have attended a Gurkha Memorial event and remembrance ceremony, assisted in the planting of a tree
in memory of HRH Queen Elizabeth at Shorncliffe, invited Vince Williams to launch the updated
History of Folkestone Rotary Club and attended the Probus Christmas Lunch on behalf of the Club.

YOUNG CHEF COMPETITION

PP Kate writes:

Young people never cease to amaze us all at their

ingenuity, talent and skills. This year’s Young Chef
Contestants are no exception. Folkestone Hotel and
Catering Association and the four Rotary Clubs of
Folkestone, Hythe, Channel and Romney Marsh co-
sponsored the event and invited young people from
their areas to compete in the Catering Department of
Folkestone College.

On Thursday 24th November, 10 nervous students

aged 12 – 16 arrived ready to cook their hearts out,
having spent months practicing and preparing.
Parents, carers and families have eaten the chosen meals several times as the Young Chefs rehearsed
the timing and cooking of their chosen meals at home. The task was to prepare a healthy main dish for
two, costing less than £10, to be presented on two plates, in one hour.

This year the competition took place in the stunning new catering facilities at Folkestone College, and
the judges were Marcin Szelag, Executive Chef at Rocksalt, David Hoseason Executive Chef at
Burlington Hotel & Greig Hughes Chef Parton at Bao Baron. The judges scored each contestant based
on the student’s methodology and preparation during cooking, knife skills as well as dish presentation
and of course taste.

This year’s unanimous winner was Stanley Stafford (Year 7) from The Harvey Grammar School with
his dish of freshly made tortelloni with a ricotta and basil stuffing drizzled with a chili oil and crispy
onions. Stanley won £50 cash from the Folkestone, Hythe & District Hotel & Catering Association
(FHDHCA) as well as a £50 voucher from Rocksalt, and tour of their kitchen. As the winner, Stanley
also has the chance to compete at the next stage of the competition at regional level. The competition’s
runner up was Isabel from Folkestone College with her dish of salmon with chili & pesto served with
crushed garlic potato and asparagus wrapped in Parma ham. Isabel won £25 from FHDHCA and we
hope also will be accepted into the District competition.

Daniel Sanguiseppe, Chairperson of FHDHCA and Ray Johnson, President of the Rotary Club of
Folkestone, thanked Ann-Marie Jones, Kathy Harrison and Connor McConville at the college and
congratulated the organiser, Kate McNeice (Folkestone Rotary) for putting on such a wonderful event.
They also congratulated each of the contestants for such a high standard of culinary expertise. The
contestants received a cookery book and a certificate to show that they had competed in a high-level
competition.

We look forward to the competition in November 2023 where we have no doubt that the talents of
Young Chefs will continue to amaze us.
