Physical Education - Chess


Grade 12 ABM/HUMSS/STEM

Chess - originated in India (trace to Indian game “chaturanga”)


- spread in Persia (used the term “shah mat” which means king helpless)
- Arabs conquered Persia and spread this game in Southern Europe
- Europe (where chess evolved and become popular in 15 th century)
- can be played casually (10-60 minutes)

Rank – 8 horizontal rows of the chess which are numbered


File – 8 vertical columns which are lettered
Ideal size of a Chess Board : 21 x 21 inches
Ideal size of each box : 2 x 2 inches
Consist of 64 boxes and 32 pieces in total (16 pieces each player)

Guide to Chess Terms


1. Check – an attack on the king, this is one that your opponent can escape
2. Checkmate – also an attack on the king that your opponent can’t escape
- player lose the game
3. Stalemate – the player to move isn’t in check but they can’t move any of their pieces
- it is a draw
4. Capture – refers to taking a piece from the board, so your opponent is a piece down
5. Promotion – a pawn that reaches the end of the board can become any piece you want except
pawn and king
6. Castling – involves the king and rook swapping positions
- king and rook moves 2 spaces from the starting position to the left or right
- this offers your king more safety

Rules for Castling :


a. The king and the rook may not have moved from their starting squares if you want
to castle.
b. All spaces between the king and the rook must be empty.
c. The king cannot be in check.
d. The squares that the king passes over must not be under attack, nor the square
where it lands on.
7. Touch move – if you touch a piece you have to move it
8. Fork - a tactic in which a piece attacks multiple enemy pieces simultaneously
9. Pin - one of the most powerful tactics in chess in which a defending piece cannot move out of an
attacking piece's line of attack without exposing a more valuable defending piece
Different Ratings in Chess
1. Bullet Rating – 3 minutes
2. Blitz Rating – 3 to 14 minutes (Blitz chess – 10 minutes)
3. Rapid Rating – 15 minutes and longer
