Electron Configuration of Elements Using SPDF Notation

This document discusses electron configuration and SPDF notation. It explains that electron configuration describes how electrons are distributed in atomic orbitals, using standard notation of atomic subshells and their electron numbers. SPDF notation refers to the names given to spectral line groups - sharp, principal, diffuse and fundamental. The number of orbitals in each subshell (s, p, d, f) are the first positive odd integers multiplied by 2 to get the number of electrons. Examples of atomic numbers 1-10 are given with their symbols and electron configurations.

NOTATION
MEANING
WHAT IS ELECTRON
CONFIGURATION OF ELEMENTS?
The electron configuration of an element describes
how electrons are distributed in its atomic orbitals.
Electron configurations of atoms follow a standard
notation in which all electron-containing atomic
subshells (with the number of electrons they hold
written in superscript) are placed in a sequence.
WHAT IS SPDF NOTATION?
The names of the orbitals s, p, d, and f stand for
names given to the groups of lines that are noted
originally in the spectra of the alkali metals. These
line groups are called the sharp, principal, diffuse,
and fundamental.
HOW DO YOU FIND ELECTRONS IN
SPDF ORBITALS?
There is also a trick to remember the number of
electrons in each subshell given below: The
number of orbitals in s, p, d, f are \[1,{{ }}3,{{ }}5,{{ }}7\]
which are the first positive odd integers on the
number line. Now, we multiply each integer by \[2\]
to get the number of electrons.
SPDF NOTATION
To write the electron configuration of an atom,
identify the energy level of interest and write the
number of electrons in the energy level as its
superscript as follows: 1s2. This is the electron
configuration of helium; it denotes a full s orbital.
