LESSON 6: MODAL VERBS (CAN & MAY)
To communicate means to exchange ideas, messages or information. A dog communicates by making
loud noise, moving its tail or showing its teeth. Humans can communicate with a smile, a wave of hand or a
movement of the head, but the usual way to communicate is through words: speaking.
One of the first ways to communicate over long distances was by messenger: someone who takes
message from place to place. In the past messengers had two disadvantages: they took a long time to take the
message and sometimes they forgot the answer. The invention of writing about 5000 years ago helped
messengers a lot. They are called postmen nowadays.
People around the world developed many different ways to send messages: blowing into sea shells,
using smoke from fires, even throwing bottles with messages in them into the sea. One successful way was to
use pigeons, a kind of bird. Soldiers used to write messages and fix them to the leg of the pigeon. The pigeon
then flew back home with the information. One pigeon flew 4500 kilometers from the United States to Britain
in 12 days – a speed of 375 kilometers a day!
The first modern ways of communicating were by telegraph and telephone. Georges Lesage made the
first electric telegraph in 1774. In 1876, Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone. In the 1920s, scientists
invented radio telephones. Today we also have mobile phones, faxes, communications satellites, e-mail and
internet to help us to exchange information quickly around the world.

SO THAT the ant could climb on to it AND float to safety. WHEN the ant was next in the area some days
later, he saw a man with a net, who wanted to catch his friend, the dove. AFTER the ant had thought about
how to help the dove, he decided to take immediate action. IN SITE OF THE FACT that the ant was very
small, he was able to give someone a nasty bite. The ant thought he could bite the man in the hand BUT that
meant a long journey OR he could bite his foot. IF he did that immediately, his plan might work SO he gave
the man a really good bite. The man let out a scream AND dropped the net. WHEREAS the man had tried to
be quiet in catching the bird, the noise he made warned the dove who flew away to safety.
The moral of the story is: IF you help someone, they will also help you.
