Preinstallation requirements
General
The room in which the unit is to be installed and the
position from where the user will take exposures
must be correctly shielded from the radiation that is
generated when the unit is operated. Since radiation
safety requirements vary from country to country
and state to state it is the responsibility of the in-
staller to ensure that all safety regulations are met.

The installed panoramic unit weighs 150 kg (330 lb),

and the pressure of the column on the floor is
1.1 kg/cm2 (15 lb/in2).
The installed pan/ceph unit weighs 195 kg (430 lb),
and the pressure of the column on the floor is
1.4 kg/cm2 (20 lb/in2).

Make sure that the floor in the room where the unit is
to be used can support the weight of the unit.

Make sure that the wall to which the unit is attached

and each mounting bolt used to attach the unit to the
wall can withstand a pull-out force of 160 kg (350
lb).

Use 10 mm (3/8 in) diameter mounting hardware to

secure the unit to the wall. The type and length of
mounting hardware must be suitable for the wall to
which the unit will be fixed.
Note that if the wall is made of thin material, you
may have to use a reinforcing backing plate on the
rear of the wall to hold the mounting hardware.

The line voltage must be between 175 - 270 VAC.

Make sure that the power supply is on a separate

breaker (10 amp minimum for 220 VAC).

The power supply circuit must be correctly

grounded.

horizontally and angularly.

2. If the beam is too far to the left or right move the

horizontal plate to the right or left.
If the beam is too high or low, move the collima-
tor plate up or down.
If the beam is at an angle, rotate the adjusting
tube.

Installation Instructions 8200910 31

3 Checking and aligning the Unit Cranex Panoramic X-ray Series

Note that you may have to make more than one

adjustment as the beam could, for example, be
too high AND too far to one side.
A one millimetre adjustment of the collimator will
result in a beam movement of approximately 3.7
mm at the secondary slot.

3. Check the position of the beam every time you

make and adjustment.

4. When the beam is in the correct position make

sure that all the collimator nuts and screws are
correctly tightened.

5. Remove the fluorescent screen.

Checking the position of the focal trough

If the focal trough is not correctly positioned pano-
ramic images will be affected.

front balls.

34 Installation Instructions 8200910

Cranex Panoramic X-ray Series 3 Checking and aligning the Unit

CORRECT
If the light beam is on the middle of the balls, it
indicates that the focal trough is correctly posi-
tioned.
The length and symmetry of the image must now
be checked. See “Checking the image” on page
37

NOT CORRECT
If the light beam does NOT touch the middle of
the balls, the position of the focal trough must be
adjusted. See the next section, “Adjusting the
position of the focal trough”.

Adjusting the position of the focal trough

1. Remove the lower hatch, the cover on the under-
side of the upper shelf.

position. Select exposure values of 63 kV, 6 mA
with spinal compensation off. Slide the cassette
carriage to the left until the READY light comes
on.

4. Protect yourself from radiation and take an

exposure.

5. Process the film and compare the ball/pin image

with the reference transparency (supplied) or
measure the image to check the accuracy.
With imaging plates measure the image with the
dental imaging software you are using.

Installation Instructions 8200910 37

3 Checking and aligning the Unit Cranex Panoramic X-ray Series

The distance between the two outermost pins

must be between 260 - 270 mm, and the dis-
tances from the middle pin to the left and right
outermost pins must be the same, within 3 mm,
and between 130 - 135 mm. The balls must be
round and not oval.

CORRECT
If the ball/pin image is correct the unit is correctly
aligned and the panoramic head support can now
be installed. See “Installing the panoramic head
support” on page 44.

NOT CORRECT
If the ball/pin image is not correct the image
must be adjusted.
If the image is not symmetrical, its symmetry
must be adjusted. To do this see “Adjusting the
symmetry of the image” on page 39.

38 Installation Instructions 8200910

Cranex Panoramic X-ray Series 3 Checking and aligning the Unit

If the image is too long or too short, the length of

the image must be adjusted. See “Adjusting the
length of the image” on page 40.

Adjusting the symmetry of the image

If the image NOT symmetrical it indicates that the
speed of the rotating unit is not constant because
the unit is not vertical in the front/back direction.
To position the unit vertically move the base of the
unit towards or away from the wall.

If the left-hand side of the ball/pin image is greater

than the right, pull the base of the column away from
the wall.

If the right-hand side of the ball/pin image is greater

than the left, push the base of the column towards
the wall.

Installation Instructions 8200910 39

3 Checking and aligning the Unit Cranex Panoramic X-ray Series

After moving the base of the column take another

exposure to make sure that the image is symmetrical
(the speed is constant).

Adjusting the length of the image

If the image is too long (stretched) or too short
(compressed) it means that the cassette carriage is
either moving too fast (stretched image) or too slow
(compressed image).

To check the speed of the cassette carriage:

1. Press the T (Test) key (on the unit control panel)
so that radiation will not be generated when the
exposure button is pressed.

2. Press the RETURN key (on the unit control

panel) to drive the rotating unit to the ready
position.

3. Insert an empty cassette into the cassette car-

riage, and then manually slide the cassette car-
riage to the left until the READY light comes on.

4. Press and hold down the exposure button. The

rotating unit will start to rotate. When the rotating
unit is perpendicular to the column release the
exposure button to stop rotation. If the rotating
unit is not exactly perpendicular to the column,
repeat the above procedure until it is.

40 Installation Instructions 8200910

Cranex Panoramic X-ray Series 3 Checking and aligning the Unit

5. The left-hand side of the small notch on the top

edge of the cassette carriage will line up with the
edge of the secondary slot plate if the speed of
the cassette carriage is correct. The tolerance is
±2 mm.

However, if the notch is too far to the left, it

indicates that the cassette carriage is moving too
fast, and if it is too far to the right (hidden) it is
moving too slow.

Installation Instructions 8200910 41

3 Checking and aligning the Unit Cranex Panoramic X-ray Series

6. To adjust the speed of the cassette carriage

adjust the angle at which the cassette motor
drive wheel contacts the cassette carriage roller.

To adjust the angle of the drive wheel turn the

adjusting screw at the end of the profile follower.

If you wish to INCREASE the length of the im-

age, turn the screw counterclockwise. This will
increase the speed of the cassette carriage by
increasing the angle of the drive wheel.

42 Installation Instructions 8200910

Cranex Panoramic X-ray Series 3 Checking and aligning the Unit

If you wish to DECREASE the length of the

image turn the screw clockwise. This will de-
crease the speed of the cassette carriage by
decreasing the angle of the drive wheel.

If a larger adjustment is required, loosen the

locking screw that holds the drive wheel mecha-
nism is position and rotate the whole cassette
motor mechanism.

7. Recheck the length of the image after you have

made the adjustments.
