Graphics Design with AI: From Ordinary to Extra Ordinary Characters

One of the wonders of using Adobe Illustrator is how you can make normal
font look like a different one. Say example you want an Arial Font a bit
extraordinary, then you can do that using Adobe Illustrator. Each part of
the letter can be altered to how you want it to be. Guess what you can create
your own font family but that will require your programming knowledge if
you wish to pursue it. So how can we transform fonts into extra ordinary
fonts.

Let’s all together walk through in transforming ordinary fonts to extraordinary

fonts.

Procedures in Transforming a Font
1. Using the Type/Text Tool click anywhere in the Art Board; then type a
letter using any font type. It can
be capital or small letter
depending on what text are you
trying to present in your graphic.

2. Use the Selection Tool to

adjust the Size of your Text
(Again always remember to
adjust size and color depending
on what text you are to present
as a final output or what is
required.)

3. Using your Selection Tool, select the Text you want to Transform then
RIGHT CLICK. Click Create Outline. You will notice that the Fonts Anchor
Points will appear.

4. Before doing Any manipulations Access the View Tab and click on Show
Grid. The Grid will allow you to have a more precise adjustment.

5. Using the Direct Selection tool Start transforming your font or text by
Clicking on the Anchor Points of the text then pulling it to any direction
you want to angle the transformation.

6. You may hold down the SHIFT KEY if you want to make a 45 Degree Angle
of Transformation.

Manipulation of Ordinary Text in Adobe Illustrator is quite interesting right?

Now most of this text manipulation can be done in almost any type of font and
with this method graphics designers are able to build their own font types. You
may wonder “Sir How is that Possible”? Ok, so have you ever looked at a Text
from a specific Brand but you can’t find it in the Font Library of your Word
Processor or Graphics Editor? Those are samples of Fonts which are turned
Extra Ordinary to make the brand unique. “Can we do the same?” Yes, definitely
We can do the same. Let’s learn about it. But first try experimenting on the
Modification of Ordinary Text we discussed earlier before we engage in premade
effects using Adobe Illustrator.

Applying Different Transformation Effects to Texts

➢ You may be wondering if there are other means to add transformation to text
apart from the pain staking method of using the Pen Tool. Yes! you are correct
Adobe Illustrator offers several methods in transforming Text or Fonts into a
new orientation such as the following.

A. Transforming Text with Scallop Effects

1. Select the text you want to Transform then right click apply the Create
Outlines Control.
2. Access the Tools and Look for the Scallop Tool which is stacked on the
Warp Tool Control. The Scallop Tool allows you to apply liquify effect in
you text.

3. Click on the Text you want to Transform to apply the distortion. You
may hold it for a few seconds until you reach the distortion effect that
you like. The elliptic shape you see is the brush size which you can
adjust at your own choice.

 There are other Transformation effects which you can do to your Texts or
Fonts itself that is readily available in your Adobe Illustrator. Try exploring
this tool starting from the other Effects found in the Warp Tool Control and
the Distort and Transform effects found in the Effects Tab. Try
experimenting on this effect into your desired Text Transformations. Let’s

apply the lessons we learned in an actual graphic design. Note that these

B. Transforming Text with Warp Effects

➢ The Warp Effect Applies a Warp to your Text. The same procedure will be
followed in applying the effect however you will need to change the effect
choice option.

C. Transform Text with Twirl Tool

➢ Applies Twirl Effects to Texts.

➢ Pucker Tools applies a deflated effect.

E. Transforming Text using Bloat Tool

➢ Applies Bloated Effect in a Text.

F. Transforming Text with Crystallize Tool

➢ Applies Crystallized effect to Text.

Power Quest #1: From Ordinary to Extra Ordinary Characters

Objectives:

1. Understand how to Transform Different Objects in Adobe Illustrator.

2. Utilize the different Tools of Adobe Illustrator to Transform different
Objects.
3. Develop a Graphic that applies Transformation Effects to Different Objects
Ranging from Text/Fonts to Shapes.

Procedure:
1. Create a New Adobe Illustrator Document and Name it as Ordinary to
Extra Ordinary.
2. Set the dimension to 1024 Pixels by 768 Pixels in Landscape Orientation.
3. Set the Property Number of Artboards to Ten. This Will Create 10 Different
Pages in Your Artboard. Use the Zoom tool to Maximize the Artboard and
Navigate through the different pages.

 4. Using the Text Tool Encode Your First Name in each of the pages. You can
use the Copy Paste Method to make it easier. Color and Font Type is your
own choice.

5. Apply Transformation using the Pen Tool in the first page and the rest of
the pages use the Different Effect You Can Find in the Warp Tool Control
and at the Distortion and Transformation Effect Tab.
6. Select any effect of your own choice.

7. You may also combine effects if you wish to explore more.

8. Always Follow the Method discussed in the Module.

9. Save Your File in PDF and AI Format. Attach the CGR to your PDF File.
Only Two Files Must be Upload in your Google Classroom the AI and PDF
Formats.

use of Colors in Vector Graphics?

➢ Having a deep understanding of colors for Vector Graphics Design allows us

to match the necessary Transition effects we want to apply in our design.
Vectors mostly utilizes primary colors however it also requires shaders and
saturation thus a good understanding of colors will allow a graphic designer
to incorporate semi-realism to the output.

2. Why is it important to have a deep understanding on the use of

Anchor Points in Adobe Illustrator?

➢ An anchor point is a bending point to modify the line segment. A path can be
open or closed. An open path has open-ended endpoints, such as a line, while
a closed path has connected endpoints, such as a circle. Paths can have two
types of anchor points: smooth points or corner points. This allows graphic
designers to control the bend and edges of a shape or any object placed in the
Adobe Illustrator Artboard.
