Week 17: Day 1 and 2 [Discussion and Demonstration]
Graphics Design with AI: Drawing Vector Illustrations using Shapes Tool

The Adobe Illustrator Shapes Tool is one of the most widely used drawing
tool in the animation industry apart from the Pen Tool. The shapes tool may
come in as a default tools consisting of the basic shapes however this shape
can be manipulated into a certain extent in which it can produce a desirable
and exciting outputs such us the different Emoticons. Let’s find out how it
works.

The Basic Shapes Tool

RECTANGLE TOOL (M)

This tool makes squares and
rectangles.

If you want a perfect square you

can hold down the shift key as you
click and drag. Otherwise just
click and drag normally to make a
rectangle. If you need your shape
to be an exact size, just click one
time and specify the size you want
your shape to be in the box that will pop up.

ROUNDED RECTANGLE TOOL

This tool works exactly the same as the rectangle tool, but the corners are
rounded instead of squared.

If you want to adjust the roundness of the corners, use the direct selection tool
and click and drag on the little circular points that show up on the insides part
of the corners and adjust them accordingly.

ELLIPSE TOOL (L)

Fun fact: an ellipse is a circle. So, any time you want a circle or an oval, this is
the tool you’ll need.

To create a circle, hold down the shift key. If you want an oval, just click and
drag. Like the rectangle tool(s), if you want a specific sized circle, just click once
on the artboard and adjust your settings accordingly.

POLYGON TOOL
The polygon tool makes any number of sided shapes – from triangles to hexagons
to octagons and beyond.

With the tool selected, all you need to do is click once on your artboard and
define how many sides you want your shape to have.

STAR TOOL
This tool obviously makes stars. With this tool, you can choose how many points
you want your star to have, as well as how far in the inner points go towards the
center.

The star tool is super fun to play around with, given how many different
variations you can come up with. Again, just click in your workspace with the
BPHS- LM Page | 2
tool selected to define the number of points you want your star to have, as well
as the distance you want between them.

Draw simple shapes

You can create a variety of
primitive shapes with the
vector Shape tools in
Illustrator. Press and hold
the Rectangle tool to view
all the Shape tools, and
then select the Rectangle
tool. Drag on the artboard
to draw a rectangle. As you
drag, look for a diagonal
magenta guide that shows
a perfect square.

Draw any type of polygon

Press and hold the
Rectangle tool in the
Toolbar and select the
Polygon tool. Click the
artboard, and in the dialog
box that opens, type the
number of sides for your
shape — for example,
type 6 to create a hexagon.
You can always change
your shape dynamically by
dragging the side widget.
Try creating a triangle.
It’s just as easy to adjust shapes with the shape tools
• To move a shape, drag its center point.
• To resize, drag any of the bounding box handles, or press Shift while
dragging to constrain proportions.
• To change proportions — for example, to create a tall, skinny triangle —
drag a corner handle in any direction, adjust height with the top or
bottom handles, and transform width with the side handles.
• If you move your cursor away from any handle, you’ll see the rotate icon.
Drag to rotate the shape
freely.

Combine shapes creatively

You can also combine
shapes to create new, more
complex shapes in just a
couple of clicks.
Draw some overlapping
shapes. Switch to the
Selection tool and drag a
selection marquee around all
the shapes to select them.
BPHS- LM Page | 3
Select the Shape Builder tool and drag a line through all the shapes you want
to unite into one shape.
Break apart shapes
It’s just as easy to
break apart and erase
parts of overlapping
shapes. Select all the
shapes. With the Shape
Builder tool, click any
part you want to punch
out as with a cookie
cutter. Don’t worry if it
still looks the same;
you’ve divided them
into separate pieces.
Press Option (MacOS)
or Alt (Windows) and
click or drag across any
section to delete it.

Have fun with colors

To color an object, you assign it a fill color, a stroke color, or both. Similar to
working in a coloring book, a fill adds color to the area inside a path or shape,
while a stroke outlines it.
BPHS- LM Page | 4
Use the Fill and Stroke color boxes in the Toolbar — you edit them one at a
time and the highlight shows which box is active. Select an object and double-
click the Fill or Stroke color box.
Select Hue (H). Move the rainbow slider (1) up or down to pick a color range,
and then move the round marker on the left (2) to adjust the brightness and
intensity. When you’re happy with the way it looks, click OK.

You can always remove an object’s fill or stroke — just click the None button
shown with a red line. Press X or click the double-headed arrow to swap the fill
and stroke colors instantly.

Colors plays a Vital Role in Vector Graphics Designing thus you should always
go back to the foundation of Colors which you have learned since you were
introduced to drawing.

Adobe Illustrator has a lot of exciting features that we can explore and take
advantage of when we are into graphics designing. Such features still utilize
the different theories and techniques we have learned since we started
learning about graphics design. Let’s apply the concept we have learned
today in an actual graphics design.

Performance Task #1: Drawing Emoji

The internet has changed the way we communicate. Our body language and
emotions cannot translate immediately through our text messages and
electronic
3 mails thus we have developed another means to express it. This
paved way to the creation of new age hieroglyphic languages: emoticons and
emoji.

EMOTICON VERSUS EMOJI

Emoticon Emoji
Emoticons are punctuation marks, Emoji: yellow cartoony faces with
letters, and numbers used to create various expressions, as well as
pictorial icons that generally display families, buildings, animals, food
an emotion or sentiment. objects, mathematical symbols, and
more.

OBJECTIVES:
1. Be able to fully understand how Perspective Design is fully utilized in
Graphics Designing Particularly in Flat and Linear Animations:
2. Be able to create an ADOBE Illustrator Graphical Output by using the
different tools of the Illustrator.
3. Understand how vector graphics are created specifically how emojis are
generated.

What to Do:

1. Create a New Adobe Illustrator Document with a Dimension of 1000 Pixels

by 1000 Pixels.
2. Name the Files as Emoji.
3. Access the Tools Panel and
prepare the control needed
from the Basic Shapes Tool:

BPHS- LM Page | 6
Procedure One:

Draw a Circle using the Ellipse Tool. (In

Adobe Suite Press the key SHIFT + ALT to
use a Constraint. Select the Color of your
own Choice.

Procedure Two:
1. Draw several new stacked
Circles with Gradient Colors of the
same color but different tone
shade. [Sample of Design will be
uploaded in your Google
Classroom since some of you are
using the Printed Copies in Black
and White].

2. Reduce the sizes of the Circles

and shades of the Gradient
gradually.

3. Follow the number of circles

as presented.

Procedure Three:

1. Add Details to your

Emoji Starting with the eyes.
2. Draw 5 Circles:
➢ One Orange on the outer
which will represent the
eyelids. (This Color will vary
depending on the color you
have selected for your
Emoji.)
➢ White for the inner
which will represent the
sclera
➢ Black which will
represent the Iris.
➢ Two small circles which will represent the details of light reflection on the eye.
Circles will vary in size. (Refer to the given sample illustration)

BPHS- LM Page | 7
Final Procedure:

• Create Two More Emojis using the same procedure however the
expressions should vary. Make sure to Stack them All together in a
Single File. Save Files in AI and PDF Format then upload in our google
classroom including your CGR. Only 2 Files shall be uploaded the AI
and PDF File.
