Smart Bin (ITP) PDF

The document describes a smart dustbin project using an Arduino Uno microcontroller and ultrasonic sensor. The smart dustbin automatically opens its lid when a person approaches within range of the ultrasonic sensor. This is intended to help keep the environment clean in a contactless manner. The key components are the Arduino Uno, ultrasonic sensor, servo motor, and battery. When an object is detected, the ultrasonic sensor sends a signal to the Arduino, which then activates the servo motor to open the dustbin lid for a programmed period of time before closing it again.

ABSTRACT
• The main objective of the project is to design a smart
dustbin which will help in keeping our environment clean
and also eco friendly. We are inspired from Swaach Bharat
Mission. Nowadays technologies are getting smarter day-by-
day so, as to clean the environment we are designing a smart
dustbin by using Arduino. This smart dustbin management
system is built on the microcontroller based system having
ultrasonic sensors on the dustbin. If dustbin is not
maintained than these can cause an unhealthy environment
and can cause pollute that affect our health. In this proposed
technology we have designed a smart dustbin using
ARDUINO UNO, along with ultrasonic sensor, servo motor,
and battery jumper wire. After all hardware and software
connection, now Smart Dustbin program will be run.
Dustbin lid will when someone comes near at some range
than wait for user to put garbage and close it. It’s properly
running or not.

INTRODUCTION
• Dustbin is the storage container used for disposing waste by
each and every person in the world. The main thing they
look in their surroundings for disposing waste is the
Dustbin. Smart Dustbin is just a normal bin where everyone
can dispose waste but integration of some hardware
components is done for more efficient use of it. Smart
Dustbin is integrated with some hardware components such
as Arduino, NODEMCU, Servo Motor, Ultrasonic sensors.
These components help in opening the lid, on detection of
human hand and waste and also sending the notification in
the form of LED. The code required to perform the above-
mentioned operation is dumped in Arduino and
NODEMCU.

HARDWARE REQUIRED
• ARDUINO UNO

• ULTRASONIC SENSOR-HC-SR-04

• SG-90 SERVO

• JUMPER WIRES
COMPONENTS DESCRIPTION
• Arduino Uno: The Arduino Uno R3 Compatible Board is
a microcontroller board that is based on the ATmega328.
Arduino Uno has 14 digital input or output pins, 6 analog
inputs, a 16 MHz ceramic resonator, a USB connection, a
power jack, an ICSP header, and a reset button. It has
everything needed to support the microcontroller, you need
to simply connect it to a computer with a USB cable or
power it with an AC-to-DC adapter or battery to get started.

• Ultrasonic sensor: This HC-SR04-Ultrasonic Distance

Measuring Sensor is a very popular sensor that is found in
many applications where it requires measuring distance and
detect objects. The HC-SR04 ultrasonic sensor uses sonar to
determine the distance to an object like bats or dolphins do.
The module has two eyes-like projects in the front which
form the Ultrasonic transmitter and Receiver.

• SG-90 Servo: The Micro Servo 9G is lightweight, high-

quality, and lightning-fast. The servo is designed to work
with almost all radio control systems. It is with excellent
performance that brings you to another horizon of flight.

• Jumper wires and Battery:This is the combo of 20CM

Wire Color Jumper Cable, M-M, M-F, F-F 10PCS of wire in
each strip of cable. It is very flexible and easily detachable to
no. of wires to your requirement. Mostly it can be used for
Orange Pi, Banana Pi, Raspberry Pi, Arduino, and other
mini PC and development boards. A general 9v Battery
With Battery Snap Connector to DC barrel jack adapter for
all your project and application needs. One can use this
adapter to power up any DC barrel jack-based power
connector using a standard 9V battery.
WORKING PRINCIPLE

• Smart Dustbin works on the principle of object

detection using an ultrasonic sensor. The ultrasonic
sensor transmits sound waves. These waves get
reflected whenever an object comes into the vicinity
of the sensor. This generates an electrical signal
which is used to open the dustbin lid.

CIRCUIT DIAGRAM

• The circuit diagram for smart dustbin contains three main

components: Arduino Uno, Power supply and an ultrasonic
sensor.

• The Ultrasonic sensor HC-SR04 pins echo and trig are

connected to Arduino Uno pins 5 and 6 respectively. The
VCC pin is connected to 5V on Arduino Uno and both the
grounds are connected together.

• A 9v battery has been connected to Vin pin on the Arduino

Uno and grounds are connected together.

WORKING OF PROJECT
• It is important to dispose of the trash properly. It is a
responsibility with which everyone should comply. In the era
of Covid-19, people are trying to innovate everyday life
things and make things as contactless as possible. Smart
dustbin is one of those innovative ideas.

• The smart dustbin uses an Ultrasonic sensor HC-SR04 to

detect objects in front.

• It then sends the signals to Arduino Uno. The Arduino

understands the signal and sends a signal to the Servomotor
which opens the flap on top of the dustbin.

• Here we have program it to open the race for only 3 seconds

after 3 seconds the flap automatically closes. You can change
that time just by making minor changes to the code in
Arduino IDE.
KEY FEATURES / BENEFITS:
• A reduction in the number of waste collections needed by up
to 80%, resulting in less manpower, emissions, fuel use and
traffic congestion.
• A reduction in the number of waste bins needed.
• Analytics data to manage collection routes and the
placement of bins more effectively.
• Improved environment (i.e. no overflowing bins and less
unpleasant odours).

• Automatically detects the garbage level and sends message

to respective municipal authorities updating the status of the
bin.

CONCLUSION
• IOT based Dustbins help the people to manage the waste
easily and help them reduce the work of calling or waiting
for the specific person to make the area clean and makes a
heathier environment to live. They won’t be any kind of
diseases and the people will be fit and are not prone to
diseases caused by these waste materials. The mission
Swachh Bharat can also be implemented easily. This system
assures the cleaning of dustbins soon when the garbage level
reaches its maximum. It will take power supply with the
help of Battery. If the dustbin is not cleaned in specific time,
then the record is sent to the Sweeper or higher authority
who can take appropriate action against the concerned
contractor. It ultimately helps in keeping the surrounding
clean and the waste management can be much easier.
